Self-sustained magnetic islands

Physics of Plasmas, 1996
Numerical simulations of a single magnetic island evolution are presented in the regime where the island width is smaller than an ion Larmor radius. It is shown that the island rotation is controlled by particle diffusion due to collisions or a background of microturbulence. More precisely, for vanishing density gradient, the sign of rotation frequency

Macroscopic Coherent Magnetic Islands [PDF]

open access: possible, 2001
We present experimental and theoretical investigations on the dynamics of coherent magnetic islands in high temperature, magnetically confined plasmas of thermonuclear interest, and of their effects on plasma transport.

The nonlinear saturation of a magnetic island

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 1989
The author obtains a nonlinear amplitude equation in slab geometry which describes the growth and saturation of a magnetic island. This is done by extending the earlier work of P. Rutherford (1974) to include nonlinear terms. The width of the saturated island is shown to be determined by the current profile, for a nonsymmetric profile.

Self-excitation of magnetic islands

Nuclear Fusion, 1994
A mechanism of island self-excitation is discussed in detail, by studying the dynamical interaction, in a tokamak plasma, of a suitably defined ensemble of ions with the electrostatic field of densely packed island chains, assuming that the ion Larmor radius is larger than the island width.

Magnetic charts of the island of Sardinia

Terrestrial Magnetism and Atmospheric Electricity, 1909
Several years ago I had the honor of presenting to the readers of Terrestrial Magnetism the magnetic chart of Sicily. I now venture to believe that some magnetic charts of the second in importance among the large Italian islands, Sardinia, would not be out of place in this Journal, especially as Sardinia reveals even more pronounced and characteristic ...
