1983Iron is a common accessory component of all rocks, but usually occurs as an oxide or hydroxide in terrestrial rocks. In meteorites and lunar samples, it occurs predominantly in an elemental form and native iron has been reported in some oceanic igneous rocks (Deutsch et al., 1977), although this is very exceptional.
