Nitrite Reactivity with Magnetite
Environmental Science & Technology, 2013Under Fe(3+)-reducing conditions, soil Fe(2+) oxidation has been shown to be coupled with nitrate (NO3(-)) reduction. One possible secondary reaction is the involvement of NO3(-) and nitrite (NO2(-)) with magnetite, a mixed valence Fe(2+)/Fe(3+) mineral found in many natural environments.

Magnetocrystalline anisotropy of magnetite
Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 2012The spin reorientation temperature T(SR) of stoichiometric Fe(3)O(4), as well as of magnetite with a small number of vacancies and magnetite containing a low concentration of Ti, Zn, Al and Ga was measured on single-crystal samples using the ac susceptibility. In the same experiment the temperature T(V) of the Verwey transition was also found.

Magnetite Nucleation and Growth
2016Magnetite is a ubiquitous iron oxide mineral found in Earth and planetary settings where its magnetic properties are, e.g., used to reconstruct past climates. Magnetite can also be biomineralized, i.e., formed by organisms such as magnetotactic bacteria or some mollusks (chitons), where the mineral is used either for its magnetic properties as compass ...

Magnetite is found throughout the Earth system and has many uses, explains Barbara Maher. It is a tracer of plate tectonic movements, a sub-cellular navigation aid and an economic resource, but also a pollutant.
