IMPALAS: Investigation of MagnetoPause Activity using Longitudinally-Aligned Satellites—a mission concept proposed for the ESA M3 2020/2022 launch [PDF]
The dayside magnetopause is the primary site of energy transfer from the solar wind into the magnetosphere, and modulates the activity observed within the magnetosphere itself.

Magnetosphere of Mars at Almost Radial Interplanetary Magnetic Field
Abstract We have studied the structure of the Martian magnetosphere under conditions of an almost radial interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Under such conditions, the currents driven by the motional electric field −1cVsw×BIMF ${-}\frac{1}{c}{\mathbf{V}}_{sw}\times {\mathbf{B}}_{\mathit{IMF}}$ are expected to be strongly reduced, and the induced ...

Kinetic-scale magnetic turbulence and finite Larmor radius effects at Mercury
We use a nonstationary generalization of the higher-order structure function technique to investigate statistical properties of the magnetic field fluctuations recorded by MESSENGER spacecraft during its first flyby (01/14/2008) through the near Mercury ...

Cluster observations of the midaltitude cusp under strong northward interplanetary magnetic field [PDF]
We report on a multispacecraft cusp observation lasting more than 100 min. We determine the cusp boundary motion and reveal the effect on the cusp size of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) changing from southward to northward.

Relationship Between Foreshock Structures and Magnetosheath Jets
Abstract Plasma structures with enhanced dynamic pressure know as jets are frequently observed in the magnetosheath. We examine a possible connection of these jets with structures reported in the foreshock like SLAMS or plasmoids. A statistical study of the relation of the upstream conditions and the occurrence rates of magnetosheath (MSH) jets and ...

Protons Reflected by Lunar Magnetic Anomalies Persistently Alter the Solar Wind Flow
Abstract Near‐terminator Chandrayaan‐1 observations reveal that protons reflected by the South Pole–Aitken (SPA) lunar magnetic anomaly frequently alter the solar wind flow above 100 km altitude. These disturbances occurred under a wide range of solar wind conditions and resembled earlier compressional events reported in equatorial regions.

Abstract The state of Mars' induced magnetosphere is highly dependent on upstream solar wind conditions. Changes in dynamic pressure alter the locations of magnetospheric boundaries such as the bow shock and induced magnetosphere boundary, while the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) impacts the formation of the bow shock.

The Effect of Fast Solar Wind on Ion Distribution Downstream of Earth’s Bow Shock
The solar wind gets thermalized and compressed when crossing a planetary bow shock, forming the magnetosheath. The angle between the upstream magnetic field and the shock normal vector separates the quasi-parallel from the quasi-perpendicular ...

Finding Local Parallel Electric Fields in Magnetotail Reconnection Using a Two‐Spacecraft Method
Abstract We investigate the use of a novel two‐spacecraft Liouville‐mapping method using data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission to determine local magnetic‐field‐aligned (parallel) electric fields in the Earth's magnetotail. The method detects the presence of local acceleration potentials by mapping phase‐space density between electron ...

Mirror Mode Mediated EMIC Wave Generation in the Magnetosheath
Abstract Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves and mirror modes (MMs), both driven by ion temperature anisotropy, are commonly observed in planetary magnetosheaths. Conventional explanations for their co‐occurrence are largely based on linear instability theory in proton–electron plasmas, which requires comparable growth rates for the EMIC and MM ...
