Although Earth's Region 1 and 2 currents are related to activities such as substorm initiation, their magnetospheric origin remains unclear. Utilizing the triangular configuration of THEMIS probes at 8–12 RE downtail, we seek the origin of nightside ...

Stellar wind-magnetosphere interaction at exoplanets: computations of auroral radio powers
We present calculations of the auroral radio powers expected from exoplanets with magnetospheres driven by an Earth-like magnetospheric interaction with the solar wind.

Response of convection electric fields in the magnetosphere to IMF orientation change [PDF]
[1] The transient response of convection electric fields in the inner magnetosphere to southward turning of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is investigated using in‐situ electric field observations by the CRRES and Akebono spacecraft.

Effect of Field Line Torsion on the Polarization of ULF Waves
Abstract In this paper we suggest a simple modification of the dipole magnetic field which introduces field‐aligned currents and torsion to the field lines. The resulting field lines are not contained in the meridional planes and have resemblance to the geomagnetic field lines in the dawn and dusk flanks of the magnetosphere. We analyze polarization of

Whistler mode waves and Hall fields detected by MMS during a dayside magnetopause crossing
We present Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission measurements during a full magnetopause crossing associated with an enhanced southward ion flow. A quasi‐steady magnetospheric whistler mode wave emission propagating toward the reconnection region with ...

Activated Magnetospheres of Magnetars
Like the solar corona, the external magnetic field of magnetars is twisted by surface motions of the star. The twist energy is dissipated over time. We discuss the theory of this activity and its observational status.

Impact Plasma Amplification of the Ancient Mercury Magnetic Field
Abstract Spacecraft measurements of Mercury indicate that it has a core dynamo with a surface field of 200–800 nT. These data also indicate that the northern hemisphere crust contains remanent magnetization likely produced by an ancient magnetic field. The inferred magnetization intensity is consistent with a wide range of paleofield strengths (0.2–50 ...

Empirical modeling of the quiet time nightside magnetosphere [PDF]
Empirical modeling of plasma pressure and magnetic field for the quiet time nightside magnetosphere is investigated. Two models are constructed for this study. One model, referred to here as T89R, is basically the magnetic field model of Tsyganenko (1989)

Storm‐Time Dst Forecast: An Innovative Approach
Abstract One of the most persistent challenges in the space weather field is predicting the storm‐time response of the geospace without knowing the predicted drivers in the solar wind. Here, a new pattern recognition algorithm is developed to predict storm‐time Dst index from 1 hr to ∼4.5 days into the future. Storm‐time Dst patterns (or reference Dst)
