Dissipation of field-aligned currents in the topside ionosphere. [PDF]
AbstractField-aligned currents (FACs) are electric currents parallel to the geomagnetic field and connecting the Earth’s magnetosphere to the high-latitude ionosphere. Part of the energy injected into the ionosphere by FACs is converted into kinetic energy of the surrounding plasma.

A Third Generation Field‐Aligned Current Model [PDF]
AbstractA new empirical model of field‐aligned currents in the Earth's ionosphere has been developed. This model is derived using magnetometer data from the CHAallenging Minisatellite Payload, Ø rsted, and Swarm satellite missions, which has created a database that spans more than 15 years.

Field-aligned and ionospheric currents [PDF]
Abstract Zmuda and Armstrong (1974) showed that the field-aligned currents consist of two pairs; one is located in the morning sector and the other in the evening sector. Our analysis of magnetic records from the TRIAD satellite suggests that in each pair the poleward field-aligned current is more intense than the equatorward current, a typical ratio

Current carriers for the field-aligned current system [PDF]
The Dynamics Explorer satellites have returned a large body of data containing high resolution magnetometer measurements and distributions of charged particles of all but thermal electrons. From these data the relations of the field aligned currents to particle precipitation structures were investigated and the charge carriers were identified.

Multipoint Field‐Aligned Current Estimates With Swarm [PDF]
AbstractField‐aligned currents (FACs) are a key component of the magnetosphere‐ionosphere system, providing the transfer of energy and momentum between the distant collision‐free magnetospheric plasma and the collisional ionosphere. The European Space Agency's Swarm mission offers a unique opportunity to explore the FACs low‐altitude end by a broad ...

Field‐aligned current response to solar indices [PDF]
AbstractMagnetometer data from three satellite missions have been used to analyze and identify the effects of varying solar radiation on the magnitudes and locations of field‐aligned currents in the Earth's upper atmosphere. Data from the CHAMP, Ørsted, and Swarm satellite missions have been brought together to provide a database spanning a 15 year ...

STARE: Observations of a field‐aligned line current
For the first time a magnetospheric line current entering the ionosphere has been unambiguously observed. The observation was made with STARE ( = Scandinavian Twin Auroral Radar Experiment), a ground based coherent radar system, which has been updated with modern computer technique, and recently taken into operation.

Multiscale field‐aligned current analyzer [PDF]
AbstractThe magnetosphere‐ionosphere coupling is achieved, essentially, by a superposition of quasi‐stationary and time‐dependent field‐aligned currents (FACs), over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. The planarity of the FAC structures observed by satellite data and the orientation of the planar FAC sheets can be investigated by the well ...
