Permeability dependence of the effective magnetostriction of magnetostrictive composites

Journal of Applied Physics, 2004
A model is presented in this article to investigate the dependence of effective magnetostriction of the magnetostrictive composites on the parameters of components including the elastic modulus, permeability, and volume fraction, etc. Concentrating on the two-component magnetostrictive composites and choosing the two components to be general ...

Magnetostriction

Journal of Applied Physics, 1968
This paper reviews work since 1961 on magnetostriction, including both its sources and its temperature and magnetic field dependence beyond saturation (forced magnetostriction). A statistical theory of the magnetostriction of ferromagnets is in fine agreement with experiments on nickel and on heavy rare-earth metals, which are reviewed in detail.

Magnetostrictive microelectromechanical loudspeaker

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2013
A microelectromechnical-loudspeaker based on the magnetostrictive effect is presented. The membrane consists of a comb structure of monomorph bending cantilevers with an area of about 16 mm2. Prototypes generate a sound pressure level (SPL) of up to 102 dB at 450 Hz with a total harmonic distortion of 2% inside a 2 cm3 measurement volume.

Relationship between magnetostriction and the magnetostrictive coupling coefficient for magnetostrictive generation of elastic waves

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2002
Elastic waves are generated in a ferromagnetic material in a static magnetic field by a time-varying magnetic field which magnetostrictively couples to the material. We present modeling showing that this coupling is proportional not to the magnetostriction, but to the magnetization derivative of the static magnetostriction.

Non-Joulian magnetostriction

Nature, 2015
All magnets elongate and contract anisotropically when placed in a magnetic field, an effect referred to as Joule magnetostriction. The hallmark of Joulian magnetostriction is volume conservation, which is a broader definition applicable to self-accommodation of ferromagnetic, ferroelectric or ferroelastic domains in all functional materials.

Magnetostrictive Materials

MRS Bulletin, 1993
Smart materials combine sensors, intelligence, and actuators to allow a material to respond to its environment. Magnetostrictive materials can be used as both the sensors and actuators in such materials. High-power magnetostrictive actuators can deliver forces greater than 50 MPa with strains of up to 0.6%, while other magnetostrictive sensor materials

On the Theory of Volume Magnetostriction

Physical Review, 1941
Volume magnetostriction is considered on the basis of the molecular field theory. Instead of the assumption of a saturation magnetization independent of volume at absolute zero (${I}_{0}$), made in the original interpretation by Becker and Kornetzki, another procedure is adopted.

Review of Magnetostrictive (MSMs) and Giant Magnetostrictive Materials (GMSs)

2020
Chapter 6 reviews magnetostriction as a property of ferromagnetic materials that causes them to change their shape when subjected to a magnetic field. The effect was first identified in 1842 by James Joule when observing a sample of nickel. This is known as the Joule effect.
