Models for the Magnitude-Distribution of Brightest Cluster Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The brightest, or first-ranked, galaxies (BCGs) in rich clusters show a very small dispersion in luminosity, making them excellent standard candles. This small dispersion has raised questions about the nature of BCGs.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Magnitude and predictors of pre-diabetes among adults in health facilities of Gondar city, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health, 2023
IntroductionImpaired glucose tolerance currently affects 374 million (7.5%) people worldwide, and by 2030, this number is predicted to affect 454 million (8%). Urban inhabitants have an increased risk of developing pre-diabetes.

Visualizing Magnitude and Direction in Flow Fields [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In weather visualizations, it is common to see vector data represented by glyphs placed on grids. The glyphs either do not encode magnitude in readable steps, or have designs that interfere with the data.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

The seismicity of the Carpathians in 2022

open access: yesГеофизический журнал
According to the results of observations at the seismic stations of the Carpathian region of Ukraine in 2022, the main parameters of 50 earthquakes in the range of energy classes KR=5.7÷13.7 were obtained.

The Absolute Magnitude of the Sun in Several Filters

open access: yes, 2018
This paper presents a table with estimates of the absolute magnitude of the Sun and the conversions from $vegamag$ to the AB and ST systems for several wide-band filters used in ground and space-based observatories.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
