The discovery and comparison of symbolic magnitudes [PDF]
Humans and other primates are able to make relative magnitude comparisons, both with perceptual stimuli and with symbolic inputs that convey magnitude information. Although numerous models of magnitude comparison have been proposed, the basic question of how symbolic magnitudes (e.g., size or intelligence of animals) are derived and represented in ...

Predictors of Middle School Students’ Growth in Symbolic Number Comparison Performance
The ability to efficiently compare number symbols, such as digits, is associated with mathematics competence across the lifespan. Performance on symbolic number comparison tasks differ across age groups; young students who are developing fluency with ...

The language of magnitude comparison. [PDF]
When 2 objects differ in magnitude, their relation can be described with a "smaller" comparative (e.g., less, shorter, lower) or a "larger" comparative (e.g., more, taller, higher). We show that, across multiple dimensions and tasks, English speakers preferentially use the latter.

Over the last decade, several methods for analysis of epileptiform signals in electroencephalography (EEG) have been proposed. These methods mainly use EEG signal features in either the time or the frequency domain to separate regular, interictal, and ...

On Comparison, Equivalence and Addition of Magnitudes [PDF]
A theory of magnitudes involves criteria for their comparison, equivalence and addition. We examine these aspects from an abstract viewpoint, stressing independence and definability. These considerations are triggered by the so-called De Zolt’s principle in the theory of equivalence of plane polygons.

Using Floating-Point Intervals for Non-Modular Computations in Residue Number System
The residue number system (RNS) provides parallel, carry-free, and high-speed arithmetic and is therefore a good tool for high-performance computing. However, operations such as magnitude comparison, sign computation, overflow detection, scaling, and ...

It is still debated if the main deficit in mathematical difficulties (MD) is nonsymbolic or symbolic numerical magnitude processing. Objectives: In the present study, our main goal was to investigate nonsymbolic and symbolic numerical magnitude ...

Learning artificial number symbols with ordinal and magnitude information
The question of how numerical symbols gain semantic meaning is a key focus of mathematical cognition research. Some have suggested that symbols gain meaning from magnitude information, by being mapped onto the approximate number system, whereas others ...

A comparison of markers for estimating magnitude of rumen digestion [PDF]
1. Two experiments were carried out with sheep and cattle receiving high-concentrate rations to estimate the amount of digestion taking place in the rumino-reticulum and omasum. Two techniques were used for the collection of samples of abomasal contents. In the experiment with sheep, animals were slaughtered at different times after feeding and samples

There is strong evidence from research conducted in the United States that fraction magnitude understanding supports mathematics achievement. Unfortunately, there has been little research that examines if this relation is present across educational ...
