Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

Magnitude of astigmatism – A comparison between eyes
Contact Lens and Anterior Eye, 2022Astigmatism is a highly prevalent refractive error and while studies typically focus to describe the axis symmetry between eyes, little is known about the refractive symmetry. Therefore, this study determined the astigmatic power symmetry between eyes in a large clinic population.A clinical chart review was conducted at three optometric practices in ...

Magnitude comparisons distort mental representations of magnitude.
Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 2002Many cognitive processes rely on representations of magnitude, yet these representations are often malleable (H. Helson, 1964; J. Huttenlocher, L. V. Hedges, & J. L. Vevea, 2000; A. Parducci, 1965). It is likely that factors that affect these representations in turn affect the psychological processes that rely on them.

Comparison of Magnitude Estimation and Interval Scaling of Loudness
Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1999To identify whether equal-appearing interval or magnitude estimation scaling resulted in a data set with a closer correlation to the physical stimuli involved 20 young adults completing two tasks. In Task 1 subjects used a 7-point equal-appearing interval loudness of 18 10-sec.

Language effects in magnitude comparison: Small, but not irrelevant
Brain and Language, 2005It is assumed that number magnitude comparison is performed by assessing magnitude representation on a single analog mental number line. However, we have observed a unit-decade-compatibility effect in German which is inconsistent with this assumption (Nuerk, Weger, & Willmes, 2001).

Comparison of Category and Magnitude Scales of Technical Skills
Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1966Magnitude and category scaling methods were employed by journeymen electronics personnel to scale the apparent complexity of various aspects of their own job. The resultant data indicated that essentially equivalent scales were produced across the methods and that the continua of perceived complexity of 4 “activity” stimuli and of 16 “circuit” stimuli ...
