Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2009
New Zealand is one of the more seismically active countries in the world, with more than 15,000 earthquakes located each year. Routine moment tensor analysis of regional seismic data for earthquakes with moment magnitude M w>∼3.5–4.0 has recently been implemented in New Zealand. Nearly 330 regional moment tensor (RMT) solutions have been calculated for

Context effects in symbolic magnitude comparisons.
Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1985Five experiments demonstrate that context has an effect on the ease with which people can determine the relative sizes of pairs of large and small animals. In a standard context, people are faster at choosing the larger of two large animals and the smaller of two small animals.

Preschoolers' Magnitude Comparisons are Mediated by a Preverbal Analog Mechanism
Psychological Science, 2000We report a study of 3- to 5-year-olds who performed a magnitude-comparison task. Stimuli were a series of pairs of arrays that sometimes differed in numerosity, and the children were asked to point to the more numerous array in each pair. The proportion of accurate responses was above chance for all age groups. However, error patterns were consistent

Magnitudes of New Zealand earthquakes: A comparison of magnitudes calculated by different methods
Tectonophysics, 1983Abstract Before the introduction in 1977 of new procedures for calculating the local magnitudes of New Zealand earthquakes, these were calculated using a derivative of Richter's method for Southern California. There are systematic differences between the magnitudes calculated by the two methods which are functions of position, magnitude and the types

Comparison of magnetic probe calibration at nano and millitesla magnitudes
Review of Scientific Instruments, 2014Magnetic field probes are invaluable diagnostics for pulsed inductive plasma devices where field magnitudes on the order of tenths of tesla or larger are common. Typical methods of providing a broadband calibration of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\begin{document}$\dot{\rm{B}}$\end{document}Ḃ probes involve either a Helmholtz coil driven by a function ...

APP designed for early math training. Magnitudes Comparison
Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Technological Ecosystems for Enhancing Multiculturality, 2017At present, we have been hearing from various educational and scientific forums the need to work on improving the mathematical learning of our students. Mathematics is considered by students as one of the most complex subjects and also the one with the least successful results in our students' grades.

Speeding up Euclid's GCD algorithm with no magnitude comparisons
International Journal of Information and Computer Security, 2010Euclid's Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) algorithm is an efficient approach for calculating multiplicative inversions. It relies mainly on a fast modular arithmetic algorithm to run quickly. A traditional modular arithmetic algorithm based on nonrestoring division needs a magnitude comparison for each iteration of shift-and-subtract operation.

Numerical magnitude modulates temporal comparison: An ERP study
Brain Research, 2009Time is believed to be a part of the generalized magnitude system just like space and quantity. Previous research suggests that time perception can be affected by magnitude in some non-temporal dimensions. Here we address two questions. First, could the influence be caused by an abstract magnitude component without perceptual variables?

Mental comparison of size and magnitude: Size congruity effects.
Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1984Paivio (1975) found that the latency to choose the larger of two named objects does not depend on congruity between the object sizes and the sizes of the object names. Because size congruity does affect latencies for pictorially presented objects, Paivio interpreted this result as support for the dual coding hypothesis.
