Accelerated Atherosclerosis in Prolonged Maintenance Hemodialysis

New England Journal of Medicine, 1974
Abstract The survival experience of 39 patients receiving long-term regular hemodialysis in Seattle since 1960 was studied with particular reference to mortality and morbidity from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular complications. Mean age (± 1 S.D.) was 37.0 ± 9.5 years for the group at the start of dialysis.

Hemoperfusion in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients

Blood Purification, 2022
The accumulation of protein-bound uremic toxins and medium-large molecule toxins in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients is one of the causes of long-term dialysis-related complications. Hemoperfusion can remove these uremic toxins and reduce the complications of MHD patients.

Protein requirements in maintenance hemodialysis

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1978
Protein requirements in maintenance hemodialysis patients are still unclear. Based on nitrogen balance studies and different analyses of protein and amino acid metabolism, the recommendations until recently were 1 g/kg of body weight, primarily of high biological value protein.

Oxygen Consumption during Maintenance Hemodialysis

Nephron, 1979
The influence of hemodialysis on oxygen consumption was studied in 15 patients on maintenance dialysis. Red cell 2,3-DPG, P50, an inverse measure of oxygen affinity of hemoglobin, arterial and central venous blood gases and cardiac index were measured.

Vascular calcifications under maintenance hemodialysis

Klinische Wochenschrift, 1977
In a cross-sectional study X-rays of the forefoot and the pelvis of 101 adult dialysis patients were taken. Vascular calcifications (forefoot) were observed in 20 patients. The incidence was higher in patients who had been started on dialysis several years ago.

Maintenance and Salvage of Hemodialysis Access

Surgical Clinics of North America, 2023
Many end-stage kidney failure patients require hemodialysis as a life-sustaining treatment. Hemodialysis access via arteriovenous fistula or graft creation is preferred over long-term dialysis catheters, but intervention to maintain patency and prevent access failure is common.
