Breeding for multi‐stress resilience in crops: Myth or possibility?

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Climate change threatens millions of farmers worldwide by exposing crops to multiple concurrent or sequential environmental stresses such as drought, heat, waterlogging, and diseases. Although crops have long been selected under naturally occurring multi‐stress conditions, breeding pipelines largely focus on optimal or single‐stress environments ...

Effect of X-ray irradiation on the F1 generation of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky and the germination rate of maize grain

open access: yesJournal of Basic and Applied Zoology, 2021
Background The use of X-ray irradiation in the control of the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) infesting stored maize was tested at 60, 70 and 80 KeV as part of the international concerted efforts to save maize ...

Hermetic on-farm storage for maize weevil control in East Africa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Maize (Zea mays L.) consumption makes up over half of daily caloric intake of persons in East Africa and adequate supply is necessary for food security for subsistence farmers, as well as for domestic stability.

Edges as ecological filters: Asymmetrical orientation‐specific arthropod activity across forest boundaries

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Moderate retention forestry creates structurally sharp forest edges that act as ecological filters, shaping orientation‐specific activity of ground‐dwelling arthropods. Using drift‐fence pitfall traps, we show that activity aligned with ecotones is more frequent than activity across forest–clearcut boundaries, particularly among detritivores.

1166. Helianthus occidentalis Riddell

open access: yesCurtis's Botanical Magazine, EarlyView.
Summary Helianthus occidentalis Riddell (Compositae: Heliantheae: Helianthinae) is described and illustrated. The species' placement in the genus is commented on, as are the differences in infrageneric placement of the other species Heiser originally grouped H. occidentalis with.

Toxicity and synergism of the essential oil of Piper aduncum L. in populations of Sitophilus zeamais(Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

open access: yesPesquisa Agropecuária Tropical, 2023
Researches on the use of essential oil of Piper aduncum L. (EOPA) as a synergist in stored grain pests are still incipient. This study aimed to determine the toxicity of deltamethrin and EOPA, as well as to study the effect of the binary mixture of EOPA +

Comparative resistance of improved maize genotypes and landraces to maize weevil

open access: yesAfrican Crop Science Journal, 2010
A comparative study of maize (Zea mays L.) weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motsch.) resistance in selected landraces and improved genotypes of maize, was conducted through a field experiment and laboratory assays. The maize grain characteristics that confer resistance to the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, namely; grain hardness, weight and ...

Screening of Promising Maize Genotypes Against Maize Weevil (Sitophilus Zeamais Motschulky) in Storage Condition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky) is a serious pest of economic importance in stored grains. It causes major damage to stored maize grain thereby reducing its weight, quality and germination.

Edge Effect on the Distribution of the Green Shield Bug Palomena prasina in Hazelnut Orchards, and the Role of Adjacent Habitats in Crop Colonization

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Spring–Summer spatial dynamics of Palomena prasina (L.) and potential IPM strategies. ABSTRACT Palomena prasina (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), the green shield bug (GSB), is an important hazelnut pest in Southern Europe. Currently, its control focuses on insecticide spraying during the crop season. We hypothesized that, as for other pentatomid species,

Evaluation of Hermetic Maize Storage for Smallholder Farmers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Maize is an important crop for many smallholder farmers in the world. Maize weevils (Sitophilus zeamais) cause a significant loss in quality and quantity during maize storage in tropical regions.
