True petit mal epilepsy does not occur often, and strict clinical and electroencephalographic criteria should be used in diagnosis. Ethosuximide and trimethadione are the most common and valuable drugs for treating petit mal, but when systematic trial of anticonvulsant drug therapy fails, a ketogenic diet may be beneficial.
