Glucosylation of salicylic acid by cell suspension cultures of Mallotus japonicus

Salicylic acid was converted into its O-glucoside when administered to cell suspension cultures of Mallotus japonicus. The efficiency of the glucosylation was highest in the cells grown in Linsmaier-Skoog medium containing 1 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxy-acetic acid at any scale of culture (7 ml - 3 1).

Isolation and evaluation of the radical-scavenging activity of the antioxidants in the leaves of an edible plant, Mallotus japonicus

The antioxidative properties of a hot water extract of the leaves of Mallotus japonicus were evaluated. The extract had a high phenolic content and strong antioxidative activity, compared with green tea, rooibos tea, and red wine. To determine the antihepatotoxic activity of bergenin from Mallotus japonicus, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes has been adopted as an assay system. Bergenin significantly reduced the activities of glutamic pyruvic transaminase and sorbitol dehydrogenase released from the CCl4-intoxicated hepatocytes.
