Pulp Callus Extract From Malus domestica var. Mela Rosa Marchigiana Preserves Intestinal Barrier Integrity and Confers Neuroprotection in a Gut–Brain Axis Co‐Culture Model

open access: yesBioFactors, Volume 52, Issue 4, July/August 2026.
Experimental design of Malus x domestica callus extract (MRME). Bioactive‐rich extract was obtained from callus culture derived from MRM apple. In a co‐culture model of Caco‐2, BV2, and SH‐SY5Y cells, LPS and DSS led to an increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis that was prevented by MRME.

Contribution of Fallen Leaves to Primary Inoculum and the Progress of Glomerella Leaf Spot in Apple Orchards

open access: yesJournal of Phytopathology, Volume 174, Issue 4, July/August 2026.
ABSTRACT Glomerella leaf spot (GLS), caused by Colletotrichum spp., persists between seasons mainly in fallen leaves on the orchard floor and in dormant plant tissues, which act as primary inoculum sources for disease initiation in spring. Because early epidemic development is strongly dependent on the availability of primary inoculum, practices such ...

Advances in QTL mapping for ethylene production in apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.)

open access: yesPostharvest Biology and Technology, 2014
Abstract Ethylene is a gaseous hormone that coordinates several important physiological processes resulting in the final fruit quality in apple. Due to its genetic heterozygousity, apple offers the possibility to exploit the natural allelic variation existing at the level of two genes involved in the ethylene biosynthetic pathway, Md-ACS1 and Md-ACO1.

Limited Plasticity of Stomatal Development in Apple Trees Across Diverse European Climates

open access: yesPhysiologia Plantarum, Volume 178, Issue 4, July/August 2026.
ABSTRACT Climate change affects plant acclimation and adaptation, particularly in long‐lived perennial crops like apple (Malus domestica Borkh.). Stomata play an essential role in regulating these plant environmental responses. This study examined variation in stomatal density (SD) and stomatal function of apple trees in 2022–2023 across four European ...

Exploring pest population dynamics using the economic entomology modeling activity

open access: yesNatural Sciences Education, Volume 55, Issue 1, June 2026.
Abstract Motivated by the increasing demand for data‐driven pest management approaches, the economic entomology modeling activity (EEMA), an Excel‐based interactive teaching tool, aims to introduce students to the complexities of modeling ecological factors in applied systems.

Genomic Selection for Fruit Quality Traits in Apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.)

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The genome sequence of apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.) was published more than a year ago, which helped develop an 8K SNP chip to assist in implementing genomic selection (GS). In apple breeding programmes, GS can be used to obtain genomic breeding values (GEBV) for choosing next-generation parents or selections for further testing as potential ...

Beautiful and Useful: Species Richness and the Ecosystem Services of Allotment Gardens in Berlin, Germany

open access: yesPlant-Environment Interactions, Volume 7, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Intensive agriculture and urbanization have led to habitat degradation and fragmentation, reducing plant diversity and subsequently reducing pollinator abundance and richness. This paper investigates the conservation potential of green infrastructure in allotment gardens, which are a common form of urban land use.

AutoPollS: A tool for automated monitoring of pollinators using deep learning

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 6, Page 1743-1753, June 2026.
Abstract Deep learning and computer vision hold enormous potential for automated monitoring of biodiversity, including pollinators and other insects. Efficient, scalable monitoring of insect pollinators is crucial given pollinators' role in supporting biodiversity and agricultural productivity amidst declining pollinator populations.
