An at-sea assessment of Argos location accuracy for three species of large whales, and the effect of deep-diving behavior on location error

open access: yesAnimal Biotelemetry, 2020
Background Argos satellite telemetry is used globally to track terrestrial and aquatic megafauna, yet the accuracy of this system has been described empirically only for a limited number of species.

The Mammals of Somaliland [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1910
SOMALILAND, it is hardly necessary to point out, for its mammalian fauna, its flora, and to a certain extent its birds, almost constitutes a separate sub-region of the African domain, together with the adjoining districts of Galaland, Abyssinia, and the northern parts of British East Africa.

Possible role of human ribonuclease dicer in the regulation of R loops

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
R loops play an important role in regulating key cellular processes such as replication, transcription, centromere stabilization, or control of telomere length. However, the unscheduled accumulation of R loops can cause many diseases, including cancer, and neurodegenerative or inflammatory disorders. Interestingly, accumulating data indicate a possible

Matrigel inhibits elongation and drives endoderm differentiation in aggregates of mouse embryonic stem cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Stem cell‐based embryo models (SCBEMs) are valuable to study early developmental milestones. Matrigel, a basement membrane matrix, is a critical substrate used in various SCBEM protocols, but its role in driving stem cell lineage commitment is not clearly defined.

Place‐based approaches to marine mammal conservation

open access: yes, 2016
1. Place-based conservation can be an effective tool for addressing threats to marine mammals, but this approach presents many challenges, such as the dilemma of whether to aim for protection at appropriately large scales or through networks of smaller ...

Vocal learning in a social mammal: Demonstrated by isolation and playback experiments in bats

open access: yesScience Advances, 2015
Isolation and playback experiments demonstrate vocal learning in bats and reveal the learning mechanism by continuous recordings from birth. The evolution of human language is shrouded in mystery as it is unparalleled in the animal kingdom. Whereas vocal

Iron‐dependent lysosomal LDL oxidation induces the expression of scavenger receptor A in human THP‐1 monocytes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In human monocytic cells THP‐1, a limited uptake of native—not oxidized—LDL/VLDL induced expression of scavenger receptor A and cellular adhesion. Induction was inhibited by lysosomotropic (WR‐1065) and lipophilic (BHT) antioxidants and by siRNAs against ferritinophagy.
