Disruptive Repentance: Protesting in the Morning Service at Waitangi in 1983

open access: yesJournal of Religious History, EarlyView.
In 1983 on Waitangi Day, nine Pākehā Christian protesters (including Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian and Baptist ministers) were arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour for interrupting the morning church service at Waitangi. In solidarity with Māori activists and wider protests, they sought to draw attention to the longstanding failure of the ...

Challenges of Monitoring Endangered Bryde's Whales During a Period of Rapid Environmental Change

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Estimating population size is challenging for rare and elusive species that occur at low densities and are difficult to detect during sampling. We estimated the abundance of a Nationally critical whale species—Aotearoa New Zealand Bryde's whales—using a custom‐formulated POPAN model which incorporated transience to account for their complex residency ...

Nest Survival Models and Genomics Illuminate Hybridisation Attempts, Guiding Culturally Informed Management to Recover a Critically Endangered Seabird

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Long‐term monitoring has revealed hybridisation attempts between the Critically Endangered Kuaka Whenua Hou (KWH, Pelecanoides whenuahouensis) and the abundant Kuaka (P. urinatrix). Here we use modelling based on population monitoring data in tandem with genomic data to investigate these attempts and the risk they pose to KWH recovery.

Toward a Talanoa Way of Knowing: Relational Transformation for Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action

open access: yesAsia Pacific Viewpoint, EarlyView.

‘Missing persons’: Ancient legacies of human–environment interaction in tropical natural properties inscribed under the 1972 World Heritage Convention

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
Abstract Cultural and natural values form the core of World Heritage designation. Properties displaying both values, however, comprise a fraction of inscriptions (currently c. 3%) to the World Heritage List. In 1992, when that fraction stood at c. 5%, adoption of the popular ‘cultural landscapes’ category of cultural heritage in 1992 was therefore ...

Modulating phonon dynamics: tailoring lattice vibrations to enhance thermoelectric efficiency in Mg3(Sb, Bi)2 alloy

open access: yesNature Communications
Heat in crystalline materials is transported by phonons from lattice vibrations, and lattice thermal conductivity critically determines thermoelectric performance.

Uptake and early outcomes of a meal replacement intervention in an ethnically diverse adult population living with obesity and significant comorbidity

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
Abstract Aims Structured meal replacement low energy diets (MR‐LED) are effective in obesity management, but evidence for individuals of minority ethnic groups or those with BMI >35 kg/m2 and significant comorbidities is limited. Materials and methods We evaluated the early effectiveness of a weight management program delivered by a multidisciplinary ...

Map and Archival Evidence of the Historical Avulsion of the Brahmaputra River

open access: yesThe Geographical Journal, EarlyView.
Short Abstract One of the world's great rivers, the Brahmaputra, avulsed—changed course—significantly sometime between the dates of 1765 and 1830. These are the dates of surveys by James Rennell (grey) and Richard Wilcox (black), both under the direction of the East India Company; no other surveys between these dates can refine the estimate of the ...
