Prosodic Realization of Focus in Changchun Mandarin and Nanjing Mandarin

This study was designed to explore the prosodic patterns of focus in two dialects of Mandarin. One is Changchun Mandarin and the other is Nanjing Mandarin. The current paper compares the acoustics of their prosodic realization of focus in a production experiment.

Prolongation in spontaneous Mandarin

This paper presents a corpus-based study on prolongations in spontaneous Mandarin. Prolongations are mainly produced for hesitation, but also for emphasizing a discourse focus and signalling an explicit feedback. 786 prolongation occurrences are investigated in terms of the position, the part of speech and the segment and tone types.

This paper examines the grammaticalization of diao from a main verb to a resultative marker in Mandarin. Diao is a multifunctional word that has undergone a process of semantic evolution in its verbal meaning, from ‘to swing’, ‘to throw’, ‘to fall down’, to ‘to disappear’.
