Morphology and ultrastructure of the mandibular gland in Camponotus japonicus

open access: yesArthropod Structure & Development, 2023
The mandibular gland is an important exocrine gland connected to the mandibles. In ants, it plays a crucial role in alarm communication and reproduction. While the overall morphology of the mandibular gland does not vary much between ant species, significant differences exist in the ultrastructural characteristics and gland size in some reported cases.

Extraskeletal Osteosarcoma of the Mandibular Salivary Gland in a Dog [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Pathology, 1999
A 14-year-old spayed female shepherd/collie crossbred dog had a 6 x 4-cm mass excised from below the right ear. The partially encapsulated, neoplastic mass had a necrotic core and was embedded in the mandibular salivary gland. Histologically, the mass was composed of numerous multinucleate giant cells and large, oval, pleomorphic cells that produced ...

Mandibular Gland Pheromone of Worker Honeybees [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1966
THE mandibular gland secretion of the worker honeybee, Apis mellifera L., contains 10-hydroxy-Δ2-decenoic acid1 and, at least in older workers (foragers), 2-heptanone2. Maschwitz3 reported that the secretion of this gland evoked an aggressive reaction from bees at the entrance of their hive, and Shearer and Boch2 obtained a similar reaction with 2 ...

Oncocytoma in the mandibular salivary gland of a cat

open access: yesJournal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2008
A cat was referred for investigation of a soft tissue mass caudal to the left mandible. Initial investigations suggested a malignant salivary gland tumour, and the mass was removed by extracapsular resection of the mandibular gland. Histopathology showed an oncocytoma within the salivary gland. An oncocytoma is a neoplastic transformation of oncocytes.
