Anatomy of the Mandibular Branches of the Facial Nerve

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1979
In operative dissections of mandibular branches of the facial nerve, we identified certain branches below the inferior border of the mandible in all cases. These usually supplied the depressor labii inferioris and mentalis muscles, though infrequently the branch to the depressor anguli oris was also below the mandible.

The marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve

Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, 1997
The peripheral, extraparotid course and localisation of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial n. is described, with variations, based on the dissection of 40 cadaver half heads. Its anatomical relationships with the ramus of mandible and facial a. are studied and morphometric features are reported.

Innervation of the mandibular incisors by the mental nerve

Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1997
This study tested the hypothesis that some sensory innervation to the lower incisor teeth comes from reentry of the terminal branches of the mental nerve through the labial plate of the anterior mandible.Ten cadaveric heads (20 sides) were dissected and studied to determine whether the mental nerve crossed the midline or reentered the labial plate ...

CT scan study of the mandibular nerve intra-mandibular path

Revue de Stomatologie et de Chirurgie Maxillo-faciale, 2011
It is mandatory to know the anatomic path of the mandibular nerve and its intra-mandibular connections for numerous odontology, stomatology, and maxillofacial surgical procedures. We present a computed tomography study of the mandibular nerve intra-mandibular path. The computed tomography of 14 mandibles was performed (vestibulo-lingual cross-section ...

Localization of the Marginal Mandibular Branch of the Facial Nerve

Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, 2007
The aim of this study was to observe the course of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve (MMBFN) in relation to the inferior border of the mandible and parotid gland and its relevance to surgical procedures such as rhytidectomy and parotid gland surgery. In this study, 50 specimens were dissected.

Considerations in the management of damage to the mandibular nerve

The Journal of the American Dental Association, 1979
If the mandibular nerve is damaged when surgery is performed, its treatment should be generally left to nature, unless the nerves are easily accessible to be sutured. The patient should be advised of the potential problem before surgery. Damage to the mandibular nerve is possible in any surgical procedure.

A new approach to the mandibular nerve block

British Journal of Oral Surgery, 1977
A new method for the block anaesthesia of the oral branches of the mandibular nerve is described. Only one penetration of the oral mucosa is made in this injection at a site which is relatively painless and which results in a more rapid onset of anaesthesia.

Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor in the Course of the Mandibular Nerve

World Neurosurgery, 2018
Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are infiltrating, aggressive tumors that are soft tissue sarcomas. This article describes 3 patients with a tumorous swelling in the entire inferior alveolar nerve suspicious for malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, which is particularly rare in the trigeminal nerve.

The intraosseous course of the mandibular incisive nerve in the mandibular symphysis.

The International journal of periodontics & restorative dentistry, 2002
The use of the mandibular symphysis as a source of autogenous bone grafting material has been well documented. Currently, no references in the literature describe the intraosseous distribution of the neurovascular complex anterior to the mental nerve with respect to its position buccolingually and apicocoronally.

Is the mandibular nerve block passé?

The Journal of the American Dental Association, 2011
Providing effective pain control is a critical part of dental treatment, yet achieving consistently reliable anesthesia in the mandible has proved elusive. The traditional inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) has a high failure rate; for example, the failure rate in lateral incisors is 81 percent.
