Impacts of fire on canopy structure and its resilience depend on successional stage in Amazonian secondary forests

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 11, Issue 4, Page 394-410, August 2025.
We analyzed the effects of fire on secondary forests' vertical structure in different successional stages using lidar metrics. Our results show that independently of the successional stage, secondary forests that experienced fire were more degraded than unburned secondary forest areas. Overall, our results show that forests in early successional stage (

Spatial predictors of landowners' engagement in the restoration of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 1, Page 247-264, January 2025.
Abstract Forest restoration can potentially contribute to multiple global sustainable development goals. Yet, little is known about the factors associated with local actors' choice to engage in restoration, limiting the development of effective scaling strategies.

DYNAMICS OF THEManilkara huberi(DUCKE) A. CHEV. POPULATION DURING 26 YEARS AFTER LOGGING IN A TERRA FIRME FOREST IN THE BRAZILIAN AMAZONIA

open access: yesCiência Florestal, 2014
http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/1980509813333Changes in the structure of Manilkara huberi population in a 64 ha area at the Tapajos National Forest were evaluated in a 26-year period after logging. Data were obtained in 36 50m x 50m permanent sample plots that

Phylogenetic conservatism in the relationship between functional and demographic characteristics in Amazon tree taxa

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 181-198, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Leaf and wood functional traits of trees are related to growth, reproduction, and survival, but the degree of phylogenetic conservatism in these relationships is largely unknown.

Geography and ecology shape the phylogenetic composition of Amazonian tree communities

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 51, Issue 7, Page 1163-1184, July 2024.
Abstract Aim Amazonia hosts more tree species from numerous evolutionary lineages, both young and ancient, than any other biogeographic region. Previous studies have shown that tree lineages colonized multiple edaphic environments and dispersed widely across Amazonia, leading to a hypothesis, which we test, that lineages should not be strongly ...

Soil water percolation and nutrient fluxes as a function of topographical, seasonal and soil texture variation in Central Amazonia, Brazil

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 38, Issue 4, April 2024.
We collected soil water percolation and nutrient flux at 60 cm depth to understand variability across topographic, soil texture and seasonal gradients within the remote Central Amazon region of Brazil. Main findings indicate percolation volume and solute concentration generally increase with decreasing elevation and clay content.
