Distribution pattern, population estimation and threats to the Indian Pangolin Manis crassicaudata (Mammalia: Pholidota: Manidae) in and around Pir Lasura National Park, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Pakistan

open access: yesJournal of Threatened Taxa, 2017
Baseline knowledge of distribution and abundance of a species whose population is facing decline throughout its distribution range is vital for its conservation planning.

High Mammal Diversity and Flagship Species Persist Under Community Conservation in a Forest‐Savannah Transition Zone in Central Cameroon

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 8, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Community conservation areas often classified as council forests play an important role in the persistence or maintenance of diverse mammal communities. However, these areas often receive limited conservation attention and resources. The Yoko Council Forest (YCF) is among the key biodiversity hotspot areas found in Cameroon.

Ecological, Historical, and Contemporary Evidence of Ground Pangolin (Smutsia temminckii) Presence in Ethiopia

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 8, December 2025.
ABSTRACT The vulnerable ground pangolin (Smutsia temminckii) is distributed in parts of southern and eastern Africa, yet little is known about the most northern parts of their range. Ground pangolins are predicted to occur in northern Kenya and eastern Sudan, but information on whether ground pangolins are present in neighbouring Ethiopia remains ...

An Exploration of DNA Extraction Methods of Fly iDNA for Scalable Biodiversity Monitoring

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 6, November–December 2025.
Metabarcoding of invertebrate‐derived DNA (iDNA) is an excellent tool for assessing terrestrial mammal diversity, but the time and costs associated with sample processing constrain its wider adoption. Our study indicates that the non‐destructive extraction of large pools of entire fly bodies has the potential to streamline and reduce the costs of fly ...

Illegal wildlife trade as the leading cause of orphaned pangolin and vervet monkey arrival to the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre

open access: yesFrontiers in Conservation Science
Illegal wildlife trade (IWT) is a major driver of biodiversity loss, threatening countless species, including pangolins (Pholidota: Manidae) and vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus).

COVID‐related changes in public attitudes toward wildlife consumption on a Chinese social media site

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 7, Issue 9, September 2025.
COVID‐19 dramatically altered Chinese online users’ attitudes toward wildlife consumption. While the majority called for an end to such practices, responses to wildlife consumption bans were more mixed. Abstract Wildlife consumption in China has been relatively common, which has led to a substantial wildlife farming industry and caused concern among ...

First photographic evidence of Indian Pangolin Manis crassicaudata Geoffroy, 1803 (Mammalia: Pholidota: Manidae), in Colonel Sher Jung National Park, Himachal Pradesh, India

open access: yesJournal of Threatened Taxa, 2023
The Indian Pangolin Manis crassicaudata is ‘Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List. We report the first photographic evidence of its presence in Colonel Sher Jung National Park of Paonta Valley in Himachal Pradesh. Camera-traps (n = 64) were used to assess the diversity and abundance of terrestrial mammals.

Pangolin hunting and trafficking in the forest–savannah transition area of Cameroon

open access: yesOryx
Pangolins have long been hunted for food and for their scales, but information on local hunting strategies in African range countries and the patterns of pangolin trafficking around sourcing areas is limited.
