Ecological niche models based on occurrence records of the amphibian chytrid fungus overestimate lethal chytridiomycosis risk

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 4, Page 995-1006, April 2025.
Ecological niche models (ENMs) based on the presence data of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) can overestimate the mortality risk of chytridiomycosis because the environmental conditions suitable for Bd presence do not always correspond to those conducive to significant host mortality.

Evaluating models of expert judgment to inform assessment of ecosystem viability and collapse

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract Expert judgment underpins assessment of threatened ecosystems. However, experts are often narrowly defined, and variability in their judgments may be substantial. Models built from structured elicitation with large diverse expert panels can contribute to more consistent and transparent decision‐making.

Sample coverage affects diversity measures of bird communities along a natural recovery gradient of abandoned agriculture in tropical lowland forests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 3, Page 480-491, March 2025.
Our results highlight the importance of standardizing biodiversity measures and incorporating beta diversity in biodiversity monitoring. We demonstrate that taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional bird diversity can be high in secondary forests within smallholder agricultural landscapes.

Intimate war across borders: Terrifying encounters, recognition, and “the Colombian armed conflict” in Quito, Ecuador

open access: yesAmerican Anthropologist, Volume 127, Issue 1, Page 96-107, March 2025.
Abstract Much anthropological scholarship on war—particularly “civil war”—focuses on violence perpetrated between organized political groups within the confines of a national space. In contrast, this article examines how “internal armed conflict” manifests across international borders, irrupting as interpersonal violence in spaces that are supposedly ...

Microclimatic variation regulates seed germination phenology in alpine plant communities

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 1, Page 249-262, January 2025.
This study combines novel laboratory experimentation based on detailed field microclimatic data to tackle the understudied topic of germination phenology in alpine habitats. The findings suggest a predictable phenological shift in the germination of alpine plants along microclimatic gradients.

Community perceptions of invasive species and environmental management in a US island territory

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 6, December 2024.
Abstract Environmental managers struggle with communicating accurate and relevant information and with gaining trust from the communities they serve, problems that are especially pronounced in minority and colonized communities. An important step in developing successful management strategies is partnering directly with the communities involved, but ...
