PD‐L2 Inhibits Protective Immunity, Th2 Cell Functional Quality, and GATA‐3 Expression During Filarial Nematode Infection

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 55, Issue 8, August 2025.
During filarial nematode infection with Litomosoides sigmodontis, PD‐L2 down‐regulates Th2 cell expression of GATA‐3 and Th2 cytokines and enables parasite survival. Concurrently, B cells suppress protective immunity through a mechanism that does not involve PD‐L2.

Molecular Epidemiology of Mansonella Species in Gabon [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2020
Abstract Mansonella perstans, a filarial nematode, infects large populations in Africa and Latin America. Recently, a potential new species, Mansonella sp “DEUX,” was reported. Carriage of endosymbiotic Wolbachia opens treatment options for Mansonella infections.

Neglected Tropical Diseases and Female Infertility: Possible Pathophysiological Mechanisms

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Battling female infertility has posed a global challenge, where neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are nonetheless a notable contributing factor. NTDs affect a variety of diseases, often of a chronic nature, which are often cited as some of the most lethal diseases operating against the most economically disadvantaged populations across the globe.

En face view ofMansonella (Mansonella) akitensis(Uni, 1983) by scanning electron microscopy [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales de Parasitologie Humaine et Comparée, 1986
The en face view of the head of M. (M.) akitensis was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cephalic extremity with major axis dorsoventral confirmed the taxonomical position of the species.

Detection of Filariid Infections in Mexican Primate Populations Through qPCR

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Primatology, Volume 86, Issue 12, December 2024.
Using a combination of noninvasive sampling and molecular diagnostic techniques, we detected filariae infections in wild spider monkeys and black howler monkeys across southern Mexico by screen for filariid DNA in host feces through qPCR protocols, with an overall prevalence of 26% positive cases.

Complete Mitochondrial Genome Sequence of Mansonella perstans

open access: yesMicrobiology Resource Announcements, 2020
The 13,647-bp complete mitochondrial genome of Mansonella perstans was sequenced and is syntenic to the mitochondrial genome of Mansonella ozzardi . Phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial genome is consistent with the known phylogeny of ONC5 group filarial nematodes.

Molecular Discovery of Filarial Nematode DNA in an Endangered Wild Pinniped (Galapagos Sea Lion, Zalophus wollebaeki)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 11, November 2024.
Our research explores to use and optimization of molecular methods for the detection and identification of DNA from filarial nematodes in Galapagos sea lion whole blood samples. We developed an accessible workflow for the genus and species‐level identifications of filarial nematodes present in wildlife DNA samples, and used this assay to test 28 ...

Associations Between Helminth Infections, Plasmodium falciparum Parasite Carriage and Antibody Responses to Sexual and Asexual Stage Malarial Antigens. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Infections with helminths and Plasmodium spp. overlap in their geographical distribution. It has been postulated that helminth infections may influence malarial transmission by altering Plasmodium falciparum gametocytogenesis.

The effect of anthelmintic treatment during pregnancy on HIV plasma viral load: results from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Uganda. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BACKGROUND: To investigate the effect of helminth infections and their treatment during pregnancy on HIV load, we conducted a 2 × 2 factorial randomized controlled trial of albendazole versus placebo and praziquantel versus placebo in pregnant women in ...

Another tool in the toolbox: Aphid‐specific Wolbachia protect against fungal pathogens

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 11, November 2024.
Wolbachia infected more than 80% of Pentalonia aphids sampled across the Hawaiian Islands and other locations. The aphid‐specific M‐supergroup strains of this symbiont protected against a specialist fungal pathogen, Pandora, but not the generalist pathogen Beauveria or the parasitoid Aphidius colemanii.
