Convection in the earth's mantle
Tectonophysics, 1977Abstract Two-dimensional pseudo-steady-state models of convection in the mantle are investigated by an improved method which yields a much finer resolution near the surface and the ends of the convection cell. The high aspect ratio previously found is confirmed for depth-dependent and non-linear vicosities.

Convection in planetary mantles
Icarus, 1968Abstract In the present paper we consider a self-gravitating sphere, of radius R and of uniform density, consisting of a core extending to a fraction η of the radius of the sphere and with a viscous mantle overlying the core. In the mantle departures from the state of equilibrium have given rise to internal motions, which are time-independent and ...

On the scale of mantle convection
Tectonophysics, 1977Abstract Observational evidence from glacial rebound and gravity anomalies shows that the mantle has a relatively uniform viscosity. Such a structure is consistent with the effects of temperature and pressure on microscopic mechanisms for plastic flow of solids. Thus the asthenosphere may extend to the base of the mantle.
