Extreme Mantle Heterogeneity Revealed by Geochemical Investigation of In Situ Lavas at the Central Mohns Ridge, Arctic Mid‐Ocean Ridges

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Mid‐ocean ridge basalts reflect the mantle’s composition and reveal processes from melting to eruption. The Mohns and Knipovich Ridges have ultraslow spreading rates, low magma budgets and erupted lavas indicating various mantle domains.

Mantle dynamics and petrogenesis of Gomer basalts in the Northwestern Ethiopia: A geochemical perspective

open access: yesOpen Geosciences
This study investigates the petrological and geochemical characteristics of basalts from the Gomer area in the Northwestern Ethiopian Volcanic Province to explore their petrogenesis and mantle source characteristics.

A Magnetotelluric Study of Mantle Heterogeneities Beneath the Northeastern United States

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Analysis of magnetotelluric (MT) data across the northern Appalachian region reveals significant mantle heterogeneity. By inverting a subset of long‐period EarthScope USArray MT data, we constructed a three‐dimensional electrical resistivity model that ...

Lithospheric Mantle Heterogeneity Drives Delayed Magmatism and Wide Continent‐Ocean Transitions in Rifted Margins

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The formation of wide, magma‐starved continent–ocean transition (COT) zones remains incompletely understood. We use 2‐D thermo‐mechanical numerical experiments, coupling hydrous mantle melting with parameterized crustal accretion, to explore controls on ...

Open- versus closed-system magmatism on Mars revealed by shergottites

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
The origin of depleted, intermediate, and enriched geochemical reservoirs on Mars has long been debated, with competing models invoking mantle heterogeneity versus crustal contributions.

Plume‐Modified Lithosphere Mantle Controlled the Cenozoic Sediment Thickness in the Tarim Basin

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The Cenozoic sediments are very thick in the southwest Tarim Basin and very thin in the northwest, but what controls these variations is unclear.

The Influence of Rotation on the Preservation of Heterogeneities in Magma Oceans

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Understanding the composition of lavas erupted at the surface of the Earth is key to reconstruct the long‐term history of our planet. Recent geochemical analyses of ocean island basalt samples indicate the preservation of ancient mantle heterogeneities ...

Distinct Hadean Mantle Sources of Felsic and Mafic Terranes Juxtaposed in the Paleoarchean

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
The short‐lived radionuclide system 146Sm‐142Nd can provide direct information about geological differentiation events in the terrestrial Hadean (>4.0 Ga) mantle.
