Mantle sources in the Arizona transition zone and global mantle heterogeneity
Geology, 1990Isotopic and trace element data for basaltic lavas from the Springerville volcanic field, east-central Arizona, define three distinct mantle components involved in magma genesis in this part of the Colorado Plateau-Basin and Range transition zone. Correlated isotopic and trace element variations indicate that Springerville alkalic basalts were derived ...

Mantle dynamics: Influence of the transition zone
Reviews of Geophysics, 1995The question of whether the mantle convects as a single layer, or whether the convection is split vertically into two or more layers, is perhaps the most fundamental unanswered question concerning the structure and dynamics of the mantle, and has ramifications throughout solid Earth geosciences.

Seismic scattering at the top of the mantle Transition Zone
Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 2003Abstract We document strong seismic scattering from around the top of the mantle Transition Zone in all available high resolution explosion seismic profiles from Siberia and North America. This seismic reflectivity from around the 410 km discontinuity indicates the presence of pronounced heterogeneity in the depth interval between 320 and 450 km in ...

We determined the stability and chemical composition of Al-bearing superhydrous phase B at 20–24 GPa and 1400–2000 °C to discuss the mechanism of water transport in the mantle transition zone and uppermost lower mantle at temperatures close to the mantle

Subducting slabs stagnant in the mantle transition zone
Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1992The P wave velocity structure beneath the Western Pacific is found from the International Seismological Center first arrival data. Special attention was paid to the deep structure beneath the Wadati‐Benioff zone. We discretized the whole mantle into blocks with finer blocks in the region of interest to obtain the velocities of all the blocks.

Slab dehydration in the Earth's mantle transition zone
Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 2006Abstract Because of the high water solubility in wadsleyite and ringwoodite, the mantle transition zone is possibly a large water reservoir. The potentially high water content of the Earth's mantle transition zone is a key element of several global mantle dynamic models.

Petrology, elasticity, and composition of the mantle transition zone
Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1992We compare the predictions of compositional models of the mantle transition zone to observed seismic properties by constructing phase diagrams in the MgO‐FeO‐CaO‐Al2O3‐SiO2system and estimating the elasticity of the relevant minerals. Mie‐Grüneisen and Birch‐Murnaghan finite strain theory are combined with ideal solution theory to extrapolate ...
