In the last few years, seismic studies of the upper mantle and transition zone have achieved significant new results in several areas. Progess has been driven largely by the increasing size, quality and accessibility of digital seismic datasets from global and regional networks and from experiments using portable instruments.

Conversion phases from the transition zones between the upper and lower mantle beneath North America have been observed at North American stations and at the GRF-array in Germany. Synthetic seismograms have been calculated in order to determine the velocity contrast and thickness of the transition zones at which conversion took place.
