Mardin günümüzde sahip olduğu kozmopolit yapısı ve şehir kimliği ile dikkat çeken bir il olarak karşımıza çıkar. Bu tezin amacı, şehrin tarihi süreç içerisinde geçirdiği dönemler ile 21.yy'da sahip olduğu kimliğin oluşum sürecini ortaya çıkarmaktır. Mardin'in tarihine bakıldığında şehir için dönüm noktasının Artuklu hâkimiyetine geçmesi olduğu görülür.
