Antarctic marine mammals and ocean acoustics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Marine mammals rely on sound and hearing as their primary means of communication and sensing their world. Concerns that anthropogenic sound in the ocean could infer their sensing, cause stress or even damage their hearing physically rose a controversial ...

Marine Treatment

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 1988
The marine treatment of sewage has become a well established practice in the UK. The technique involves the discharge of sewage through a system of ports or diffusers at a carefully chosen location (often several, kilometers out to sea) which will ensure that the subsequent dilution and dispersion of the sewage will achieve the required water quality ...

Decellularized Extracellular Matrix (dECM) in Tendon Regeneration: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Decellularized Extracellular Matrix (dECM) offers a promising solution by replicating the native tendon microenvironment and promoting regeneration. This review highlights advances in the decellularization methods, as well as their integration with emerging technologies and translational progress in tendon tissue engineering.

Community structure of metazoan parasites of Trichiurus lepturus (Perciformes, Trichiuridae) from Ubatuba, Southwestern Atlantic Ocean,Brazil

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2014
This study aimed to evaluate the community structure of metazoan parasites of Trichiurus lepturus from Ubatuba, Brazil. Fifty fish were collected in February 2008. Our statistical approach consisted in evidencing the most interesting infrapopulations, in

Coyote (Canis latrans) use of marine resources in coastal California: A new behavior relative to their recent ancestors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Coyotes ( Canis latrans) are known to consume marine foods, but the importance and persistence of marine subsidies to coyotes is unknown. Recent access to a marine subsidy, especially if gained following apex predator loss, may facilitate coyote ...

Oxygen Supply of Islets of Langerhans by Photosynthetically Active Microalgae in Bioprinted Co‐Cultures Maintains Their Function in a Hypoxic Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed a bioprinted co‐culture system embedding rat pancreatic islets and Scenedesmus sp. microalgae spatially defined in close vicinity. Red light was found optimal to ensure microalgal photosynthesis while maintaining islet viability and functionality. A tailored co‐culture medium supported both cell types.

Integrated Visible Light and Oxidant Protection Through Multifunctional Sunscreens

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
High‐energy visible radiation (HEVR), although less energetic than UV light, penetrates deeper into the skin and contributes to photoaging, pigmentation disorders, and oxidative stress. The development of new HEVR‐targeted filters, therefore, represents not only a scientific challenge but also a pressing public health and cosmetic industry need.
