Marine heatwaves are a major threat to marine ecosystems globally, yet standard marine heatwave definitions, despite providing consistent metrics, do not capture pre- and post-event warm anomalies, leading to systematic underestimation of total heat ...

Abstract The adaptive potential and resilience of cold‐adapted phytoplankton to climate change have the potential to impact polar marine food webs and global biogeochemical cycles. Two central but poorly constrained facets of adaptive potential in polar phytoplankton are standing genetic diversity and its spatial structure. Here, we partially sequenced

Ultraviolet radiation lowers upper thermal limits in marine diatoms
Abstract Escalating ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and ocean warming are expected to interactively shape phytoplankton performance, yet their combined effects on diatom thermal plasticity remain poorly resolved. We quantified how UVR alters growth‐based thermal performance curves in three model marine diatoms grown across species‐specific temperature ...

ABSTRACT Marine waters are becoming warmer and acidified and experiencing more intense and longer heatwaves under climate change. These changes are already impacting marine ecosystems and seafood production, which are vital for supporting food security and economic productivity.

Contribution of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation to Global Mean Sea Level Trends: Revisited
Abstract Three decades of satellite altimeter observations reveal a continued rise in global mean sea level (GMSL), with the rate of rise reflecting the combined effects of decadal variability and long‐term warming. By decomposing 30‐year running trends of reconstructed sea level over 1950–2019, we quantify the contribution associated with the Pacific ...

A multiple baseline approach for marine heatwaves [PDF]
Marine heatwaves and other extreme temperature events can drive biological responses, including mass mortality. However, their effects depend on how they are experienced by biological systems (including human societies).

Divergent Influences of Oceanic Western Boundary Currents on Weak and Strong Tropical Cyclones
Abstract Tropical cyclones (TCs) in the Northern Hemisphere often cross oceanic western boundary currents (WBCs), yet how these warm currents modulate TC intensity remains unclear. We analyze TCs traversing the Kuroshio and Gulf Stream during 1993–2025 and find that weak TCs respond more favorably than strong TCs.

Heatwave duration, intensity and timing as drivers of performance in larvae of a marine invertebrate
In marine ecosystems, crustaceans face an alarming threat from the increasing frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves as their early planktonic stages are particularly temperature sensitive.

Sociability Under Anthropogenic Change: From Individual Behaviour to Population‐Level Consequences
Our review synthesises empirical and theoretical research on how anthropogenic environmental change reshapes animal social behaviour from individuals to populations. We use sociability as an individual‐level lens, distinguishing context‐dependent expression from repeatable interindividual differences and linking both to social relationships, network ...
