A comparison of the UK's hot, dry summers of 1976 and 2025

open access: yesWeather, Volume 81, Issue 10, Page 330-337, October 2026.
Summer 2025 was the warmest so far recorded for the UK, and low precipitation amounts in preceding months and through the summer led to drought conditions in many areas of the UK. The hot, dry conditions prompted many comparisons with the infamous hot, dry summer of 1976.

Marine heatwaves

open access: yes, 2020
Ocean temperature variability is a fundamental component of the Earth's climate system, and extremes in this variability affect the health of marine ecosystems around the world.

Surface Chlorophyll‐a Trends in the Mediterranean Sea: Seasonal Bloom Dynamics and Drivers

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Chlorophyll‐a (Chl‐a) is the most widely used proxy for phytoplankton biomass, bloom intensity, and trophic status in marine ecosystems. We analyzed 27 years (1998–2024) of 1 km‐resolution satellite‐derived Chl‐a data across the Mediterranean Sea and evaluated long‐term trends, bloom phenology, and seasonal variability in relation to sea ...

Can plankton cope with marine heatwaves? Lessons from a tiny crustacean

open access: yes
Marine heatwaves are becoming more frequent as the ocean warms, but their effects are not limited to large or charismatic organisms. This study looks at how a tiny but ecologically crucial planktonic crustacean, the copepod Paracartia grani, responds ...

Marine heatwaves disrupt ecosystem structure and function via altered food webs and energy flux

open access: yesNature Communications
The prevalence and intensity of marine heatwaves is increasing globally, disrupting local environmental conditions. The individual and population-level impacts of prolonged heatwaves on marine species have recently been demonstrated, yet whole-ecosystem ...

Deep Learning‐Based Statistical Downscaling of Sea Surface Temperature Using a Residual Corrective Neural Network

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 5, October 2026.
Abstract The large‐scale oceanic and atmospheric forecasts provided by global climate models typically lack sufficient resolution to accurately capture the response of the coastal ocean to atmospheric forcing and coastal circulation that drive fine‐scale sea surface temperature (SST) variability.

Thermal suppression of gametogenesis can explain historical collapses in larval recruitment in Strongylocentrotus purpuratus

open access: yesCommunications Biology
Projections for population viability under climate change are often made using estimates of thermal lethal thresholds. These estimates vary across life history stages and can be valuable for explaining or forecasting shifts in population viability ...

Heatwaves trigger intense coral bleaching in Lakshadweep the Hindu dated 7th May 2024 [PDF]

open access: yes
In an alarming situation, the researchers of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) have recorded a widespread bleaching event impacting the coral reefs in the Lakshadweep Sea owing to marine heatwaves.
