The role of macroalgal habitats as ocean acidification refugia within coastal seascapes

open access: yesCambridge Prisms: Coastal Futures, 2023
Ocean acidification (OA) refers to a global decline in the average pH of seawater driven by the absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Marine macroalgae, while affected by this pH change, are also able to modify seawater pH through their own ...

Biosorption of cadmium by biomass of brown marine macroalgae [PDF]

open access: yesBioresource Technology, 2005
Five different brown seaweeds, Bifurcaria bifurcata, Saccorhiza polyschides, Ascophyllum nodosum, Laminaria ochroleuca and Pelvetia caniculata were studied for their ability to remove cadmium from aqueous solution. Kinetics of cadmium adsorption by all the algae were relatively fast, with 90% of total adsorption occurring in less than 1h.
