A Chirality‐Converted Bacteriolytic Dodecapeptide Regulates Vibrio‐Induced Polymicrobial Infection and Ameliorates Invasion‐Associated Gut Microbiota Disequilibrium

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Multidrug‐resistant Vibrio infections are rising rapidly and threaten coastal populations worldwide. This study introduces D‐zp37, a chirality‐engineered antimicrobial peptide with exceptional potency against resistant Vibrio species. D‐zp37 kills planktonic cells, blocks mixed‐species biofilms, disrupts essential bacterial stress responses, and shows ...

Status of Pasil Reef Marine Sanctuary in Cogtoug Bay. Philippines

open access: yesJPAIR, 2008
The status of corals and reef fish resources inside Pasil ReeJ Marine Sanctuary in Cogtong Bay, Bohol, Philippines was surveyed using 50m Lille Intercept Transect method to obtain percent coral cover. The coral reef fish populations in the sanctuary were

Marine Protected Areas debate: Implications for the proposed Phakisa Marine Protected Areas Network

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Science, 2016
South Africa recently had the privilege of hosting prominent fisheries scientist Professor Ray Hilborn from Washington University who stimulated lively discussion on global stock status, food production, impacts of trawling on the seabed, fisheries management and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Professor Hilborn gave a seminar billed as 'Fisheries Myths'

Mechanically Robust Biodegradable Stents With Theragenerative Vascular Responses via Combined 3D Printing and Janus Nanoengineering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work introduces a theragenerative 3D‐printed biodegradable stent with Janus nanoarchitecture for spatially controlled vascular healing. A luminal tantalum ion–implanted surface accelerates endothelialization and hemocompatibility, while an abluminal sirolimus/poly‐L‐lactic acid–tantalum layer provides sustained drug release and suppresses smooth ...

Marine Protected Areas in Fisheries Management [PDF]

open access: yes
The use of protected areas as a fishery management tool has been suggested as a hedge against management failures and variation in harvests. A stochastic bioeconomic model of a two-species fishery will be used to test the performance of protected areas ...

The Synergism of β‐Cyclodextrin and Fe3+ Enabled Anti‐Swelling Ion‐Conductive Hydrogels for Multimodal Underwater Sensing Aided by Machine Learning Algorithms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An anti‐swelling ion‐conductive hydrogel is developed via β‐cyclodextrin and Fe3+ synergism, enabling reliable underwater motion sensing and Morse code communication. Integrated with machine learning, the system achieves 98.6% accuracy in real‐time underwater handwriting recognition for rapid information transmission.

High‐Performance Recycling Biobased Photopolymers for 3D Printing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
By using biobased phenols like eugenol, novel biobased photopolymers containing dissociative phenol‐carbamate bonds are designed for 3D printing. Meanwhile, a “mixed‐monomer assisted recycling” strategy is proposed to recycle the materials. The resulting materials not only achieve high‐performance and excellent chemical recyclability simultaneously ...

Little progress in ecoregion representation in the last decade of terrestrial and marine protected area expansion leaves substantial tasks ahead

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
Adequate representation of biodiversity in protected area networks is a prerequisite for successful conservation. Aichi Target 11 of the Convention on Biological Diversity called for 17 % of land area and 10 % of marine area to be conserved in ...
