Marine Protected Areas debate: Implications for the proposed Phakisa Marine Protected Areas Network

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Science, 2016
South Africa recently had the privilege of hosting prominent fisheries scientist Professor Ray Hilborn from Washington University who stimulated lively discussion on global stock status, food production, impacts of trawling on the seabed, fisheries management and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Professor Hilborn gave a seminar billed as 'Fisheries Myths'

Computational Analysis of a GST‐Based Long‐Wave Infrared Microring Resonator on a ZnSe Platform as a Photonic Sensor

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, EarlyView.
A Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST)‐based microring resonator is designed and simulated on a ZnSe‐platform that operates in the long‐wave infrared (LWIR) wavelength of 8 μm. The structure demonstrates strong power confinement and high Q‐factor. GST resonator is used for gas and biosensing applications.

Marine Protected Areas in Fisheries Management [PDF]

open access: yes
The use of protected areas as a fishery management tool has been suggested as a hedge against management failures and variation in harvests. A stochastic bioeconomic model of a two-species fishery will be used to test the performance of protected areas ...
