Decellularized Extracellular Matrix (dECM) in Tendon Regeneration: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Decellularized Extracellular Matrix (dECM) offers a promising solution by replicating the native tendon microenvironment and promoting regeneration. This review highlights advances in the decellularization methods, as well as their integration with emerging technologies and translational progress in tendon tissue engineering.

Fisher's perceptions about a marine protected area over time

open access: yesAquaculture and Fisheries, 2020
The perceptions of fishers towards the Arrábida Marine Park, a marine protected area (MPA) in the west coast of Portugal, were studied through face-to-face interviews in two different moments of the MPA life cycle.

Oxygen Supply of Islets of Langerhans by Photosynthetically Active Microalgae in Bioprinted Co‐Cultures Maintains Their Function in a Hypoxic Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed a bioprinted co‐culture system embedding rat pancreatic islets and Scenedesmus sp. microalgae spatially defined in close vicinity. Red light was found optimal to ensure microalgal photosynthesis while maintaining islet viability and functionality. A tailored co‐culture medium supported both cell types.

From the Galalpagos to Tongariro: Recognizing and saving the most important places in the world [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Protected areas are one of the less glamorous areas of international environmental law. They are commonly overshadowed by what are perceived as much more dramatic topics, which capture the public attention to a much greater degree.1 This is a highly ...

Epidermal Patch Technologies for Integrated Healthcare and Infection Management

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Epidermal patches have evolved from simple wound coverings into multifunctional, skin‐conformable platforms integrating drug delivery, biosensing, and therapeutic functionalities. This review highlights their material innovations, fabrication strategies, and intelligent designs, including hydrogels, microneedles, and flexible electronics, while ...

L’extension récente de la taille des aires marines protégées : une progression des surfaces inversement proportionnelle à leur normativité

open access: yesVertigO, 2011
Multiplying the creation of marine protected areas and especially large areas is a recent political phenomenon at large scale. Legal content of the areas is often poorly defined and it appears that their normativity is generally quite low, inversely ...

Larval abundances of rockfishes that were historically targeted by fishing increased over 16 years in association with a large marine protected area [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2017
Marine protected areas (MPAs) can facilitate recovery of diminished stocks by protecting reproductive adults. To effectively augment fisheries, however, reproductive output must increase within the bounds of MPAs so that larvae can be exported to ...

Quiet(er) marine protected areas

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin, 2015
A core task in endangered species conservation is identifying important habitats and managing human activities to mitigate threats. Many marine organisms, from invertebrates to fish to marine mammals, use acoustic cues to find food, avoid predators, choose mates, and navigate.

Evaluation of the reserve effect in a marine protected area in Sagres (PNSACV) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), especially when set up as marine reserves, have been found beneficial for fish communities and species worldwide. Evaluation of MPA effects needs to be done to understand whether existing protection measures are efficient ...

Tough, Ductile, and Strong Hard‐Soft Cementitious Composite Enabled by Multi‐Material Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Drawing inspiration from the layered hard‐soft architecture found in sea sponges, this work establishes a new framework for architected cementitious composites (ACC) through multi‐material additive manufacturing (MMAM) process. The integration of mortar and elastomer phases into layered architectures enables synergistic toughening mechanisms, including
