Tectonic Re‐Organization and Onset of South Caspian Escape Tectonics at 1.8–2.4 Ma

open access: yesBasin Research, Volume 38, Issue 6, November‐December 2026.
We show that the presently active tectonics of the South Caspian began relatively recently, likely in the range 1.8–2.4 Myr and replacing an older tectonic configuration ending in the Miocene at ~6 Ma. The various short‐lived stages in the destruction of the South Caspian have potential for insight into the late stages of basin closure and the ...

Spectral Analysis of Carboniferous Rhythmites Indicates Tidal Modulation and Marine Connectivity in the Cumberland Basin (Joggins Formation, Atlantic Canada)

open access: yesBasin Research, Volume 38, Issue 6, November‐December 2026.
Statistically significant cyclicity preserved in Joggins Formation rhythmites is most consistent with tidal modulation. These findings provide new quantitative evidence that tidal energy propagated into the Cumberland Basin, supporting interpretations of marine connectivity during Late Carboniferous deposition.

EMIT Reveals Elevated Calcite Signatures in Shorelines of Lake Powell and Lake Mead Exposed by Drought and Colorado River Management

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract Nearly half of Earth’s seasonal freshwater storage variability occurs in human‐managed reservoirs, resulting in large areas of reservoir‐bed that are episodically inundated or subaerially exposed. Here we use hyperspectral data from NASA’s Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) mission to map calcite mineral assemblages across ...
