On Markov blankets and hierarchical self-organisation
Biological self-organisation can be regarded as a process of spontaneous pattern formation; namely, the emergence of structures that distinguish themselves from their environment. This process can occur at nested spatial scales: from the microscopic (e.g., the emergence of cells) to the macroscopic (e.g. the emergence of organisms).

Sentience and the Origins of Consciousness: From Cartesian Duality to Markovian Monism
This essay addresses Cartesian duality and how its implicit dialectic might be repaired using physics and information theory. Our agenda is to describe a key distinction in the physical sciences that may provide a foundation for the distinction between ...

Recurrent, nonequilibrium systems and the Markov blanket assumption
Abstract Markov blankets – statistical independences between system and environment – have become popular to describe the boundaries of living systems under Bayesian views of cognition. The intuition behind Markov blankets originates from considering acyclic, atemporal networks.

Hybrid Local Causal Structure Learning
ocal causal structure learning focuses on identifying the direct causes and direct effects of a given target variable without learning an entire causal network. Existing local causal structure learning algorithms are usually completed by two steps.

This commentary focuses upon the relationship between two themes in the target article: the ways in which a Markov blanket may be defined and the role of precision and salience in mediating the interactions between what is internal and external to a ...

Designing Reconfigurable Intelligent Systems with Markov Blankets
Compute Continuum (CC) systems comprise a vast number of devices distributed over computational tiers. Evaluating business requirements, i.e., Service Level Objectives (SLOs), requires collecting data from all those devices; if SLOs are violated, devices must be reconfigured to ensure correct operation.
