On Markov blankets and hierarchical self-organisation

open access: yesJournal of Theoretical Biology, 2020
Biological self-organisation can be regarded as a process of spontaneous pattern formation; namely, the emergence of structures that distinguish themselves from their environment. This process can occur at nested spatial scales: from the microscopic (e.g., the emergence of cells) to the macroscopic (e.g. the emergence of organisms).

Sentience and the Origins of Consciousness: From Cartesian Duality to Markovian Monism

open access: yesEntropy, 2020
This essay addresses Cartesian duality and how its implicit dialectic might be repaired using physics and information theory. Our agenda is to describe a key distinction in the physical sciences that may provide a foundation for the distinction between ...

Online Streaming Features Selection via Markov Blanket

open access: yesSymmetry, 2022
Streaming feature selection has always been an excellent method for selecting the relevant subset of features from high-dimensional data and overcoming learning complexity.

Recurrent, nonequilibrium systems and the Markov blanket assumption

open access: yesBehavioral and Brain Sciences, 2022
Abstract Markov blankets – statistical independences between system and environment – have become popular to describe the boundaries of living systems under Bayesian views of cognition. The intuition behind Markov blankets originates from considering acyclic, atemporal networks.

bNEAT: a Bayesian network method for detecting epistatic interactions in genome-wide association studies

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2011
Background Detecting epistatic interactions plays a significant role in improving pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of complex human diseases. A recent study in automatic detection of epistatic interactions shows that Markov Blanket-based

Hybrid Local Causal Structure Learning

open access: yesJisuanji kexue yu tansuo, 2021
ocal causal structure learning focuses on identifying the direct causes and direct effects of a given target variable without learning an entire causal network. Existing local causal structure learning algorithms are usually completed by two steps.

Choosing a Markov blanket

open access: yesBehavioral and Brain Sciences, 2019
This commentary focuses upon the relationship between two themes in the target article: the ways in which a Markov blanket may be defined and the role of precision and salience in mediating the interactions between what is internal and external to a ...

Designing Reconfigurable Intelligent Systems with Markov Blankets

open access: yes, 2023
Compute Continuum (CC) systems comprise a vast number of devices distributed over computational tiers. Evaluating business requirements, i.e., Service Level Objectives (SLOs), requires collecting data from all those devices; if SLOs are violated, devices must be reconfigured to ensure correct operation.

Discriminative Structure Learning of Bayesian Network Classifiers from Training Dataset and Testing Instance

open access: yesEntropy, 2019
Over recent decades, the rapid growth in data makes ever more urgent the quest for highly scalable Bayesian networks that have better classification performance and expressivity (that is, capacity to respectively describe dependence relationships between
