Room-temperature photo-induced martensitic transformation in a protein crystal

open access: yesIUCrJ, 2019
Martensitic transformations are the first-order crystal-to-crystal phase transitions that occur mostly in materials such as steel, alloys and ceramics, thus having many technological applications.

Thermal stability and phase transformations of martensitic Ti–Nb alloys

open access: yesScience and Technology of Advanced Materials, 2013
Aiming at understanding the governing microstructural phenomena during heat treatments of Ni-free Ti-based shape memory materials for biomedical applications, a series of Ti-Nb alloys with Nb concentrations up to 29 wt% was produced by cold-crucible casting, followed by homogenization treatment and water quenching.

Active Stiffness Modulation of Flexible PDMS Elastomer by Embedding Shape Memory Alloy Wires: Fabrication and Modeling

open access: yesFlexTech, EarlyView.
Active stiffness modulation is achieved in NiTi shape memory alloy‐reinforced PDMS and carbon fiber‐epoxy composites, with reversible 3‐fold modulus increase via Joule heating and validated predictive models, which resolves longstanding adaptive design challenges.

Entropy change at the martensitic transformation in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni_{2+x}Mn_{1-x}Ga

open access: yes, 2003
The entropy change $\Delta S$ between the high-temperature cubic phase and the low-temperature tetragonally-based martensitic phase of Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga ($x = 0 - 0.20$) alloys was studied.

Precursor Phenomena of Martensitic Phase Transformation

open access: yesMaterials Transactions, JIM, 1992
The unique aspect of martensitic transformation is pointed out to lie in coexistence of apparently contradictory features of «non-locality» and «discreteness» during the ordering process. As a remarkable manifestation of this unique feature, the precursor phenomenon called «ghost lattice effect» observed in X-ray diffraction experiments is discussed ...

Recent advances in multifunctional soft robots: A materials–structures–systems co‐design perspective for synergistic integration

open access: yesFlexMat, EarlyView.
Abstract Soft robots, engineered from highly compliant materials, offer superior adaptability and safety in unstructured environments compared to their rigid counterparts. Recent advancements, fueled by bio‐inspiration and material programmability, have led to the rapid co‐evolution of their core modules: actuation, sensing, protection, energy, and ...

Stress-induced α″ martensite and its variant selection in a metastable β titanium alloy under an uniaxial compression

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
The phase transformation of β to stress-induced α″ martensitic progresses in a displacive mode. The associated transformation strain induced by β to α″ martensitic has an important influence on the resultant microstructure.

Dislocations Help Initiate the α–γ Phase Transformation in Iron—An Atomistic Study

open access: yesMetals, 2019
Using molecular dynamics simulation, we studied the influence of pre-existing dislocations on the austenitic and the martensitic phase transformations in pure iron. The simulations were performed in a thin-film geometry with (100) surfaces. We found that
