The Problem of Pain: How Journalism Turns to Altruism to Manage Suffering

open access: yesJournalism and Media
Journalists are on the front lines in managing the most difficult experiences of this world: loss and loneliness, sorrow and sadness. As a part of their professional practice in the field, journalists often end up taking on their share of that pain.

Coupling of Er3+ ions and Plasmonic Modes in Vertical Nanocavities for Spectral Broadening in Telecom Bands

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Left: Illustration of the glass & nanostructures system and the NIR emission at 1.5 µm, where the colored spheres represent the Er3+ ions within the doped glass. Right: Representation of the Stark splitting of the 4I13/2 and 4I15/2 manifolds of the Er3+, illustrating how the plasmonic modes facilitate the emission from the broader Stark manifold ...

Thickness‐Dependent Infrared Emissivity of Ultrathin Freestanding MoSiN Nanocomposite Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Metals and dielectrics show opposite trends in thickness‐dependent infrared emissivity: metallic films exhibit a rise in emissivity below a critical thickness, while dielectric films show a corresponding decline. For applications demanding both high emissivity and mechanical strength in membranes with nanoscale thickness, combining these ...

Exciton Radiative Lifetimes in Hexagonal Diamond Ge and SixGe1–x Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Strong room‐temperature photoluminescence reported in hexagonal Ge conflicts with theory predicting a nearly dark band edge. First‐principles calculations of excitonic radiative lifetimes fill a key gap in this debate, showing that pristine hexagonal Ge remains intrinsically weakly emissive, while Si alloying only modestly shortens the lifetime and ...

Luminescence and Photochromism in Lanthanide‐Doped Hackmanites

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Lanthanide‐doped lithium hackmanite derivatives are prepared utilizing a doped LiAlSiO4 precursor to modify luminescent and photochromic properties. Upon UV excitation, europium doping results in green Eu2+ persistent luminescence from shallow traps. Contrarily, samarium doping induces unusual near‐infrared photochromism.

Tuning Excitonic Properties and Charge Carrier Dynamics by Halide Alloying in Cs3Bi2(Br1−xIx)9 Semiconductors

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
This work studies the effect of halide alloying in Cs3Bi2(Br1−xIx)9 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) semiconductors. The x = 0.6 shows the smallest bandgap, lowest exciton binding energy, and longest charge carrier lifetimes, showing promising properties for optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications.

Spacer‐Less Substrate‐Integrated Metasurface for Near‐Unity Terahertz Absorption

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Although conventional metal‐insulator‐metal (MIM) terahertz (THz) absorbers can provide near‐unity absorption, their multilayer stacks inevitably introduce additional thickness, mass, and residual stress, which limit their compatibility with THz thermal sensing platforms.

Sensationalism versus Substance: Exploring “Viral” and “Quality” Journalism in the Greek Public Sphere

open access: yesJournalism and Media
In an era dominated by the digital revolution, the distribution of information has undergone a profound transformation. The duality of “quality journalism” and “viral journalism” has become an important theme in the modern media landscape.
