Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Metabolic profiling of body fluids and multivariate data analysis

open access: yesMethodsX, 2017
Metabolome analyses of body fluids are challenging due pre-analytical variations, such as pre-processing delay and temperature, and constant dynamical changes of biochemical processes within the samples.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

A Streamlined Workflow for Microscopy-Driven MALDI Imaging Mass Spectrometry Data Collection

open access: yesJournal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI IMS) is a rapidly advancing technology for biomedical research. As spatial resolution increases, however, so does acquisition time, file size, and experimental cost, which increases the need to perform precise sampling of targeted tissue regions to optimize the biological ...

(A276) Young People at Mass Gathering Events: Data Collection Tools and Findings [PDF]

open access: yesPrehospital and Disaster Medicine, 2011
BackgroundDuring the summer months in Australia, school leavers celebrate their end of school life at Schoolies festivals around the nation. These events are typically described as a mass gathering as they are an organised event taking place within a defined space, which is attended by a large number of people.Discussion and ObservationsTwo research ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Database discrepancies in understanding the burden of mass shootings in the United States, 2013–2020Research in context

open access: yesThe Lancet Regional Health. Americas, 2023
Summary: Background: The United States experiences more mass shootings than any other nation in the world. Various entities have sought to collect data on this phenomenon, but there is no scholarly consensus regarding how best to define mass shootings ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).
