The Influence of Bush Encroachment on the Abundance and Species Richness of Rodents in a Mesic Savanna

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 4, December 2024.
ABSTRACT The study assessed the influence of woody plant encroachment on the diversity of rodents in mesic savannas at the Roodeplaat and Goss Farms in South Africa. Some 142 animals from six species were recorded in 1748 trap nights. The non‐encroached habitat showed twice the species richness of encroached habitats, and three species were notably ...

Human Papillomaviruses and Non‐Melanoma Skin Cancer: Basic Virology and Clinical Manifestations

open access: yesDisease Markers, Volume 23, Issue 4, Page 247-259, 2007., 2007
Human papillomaviruses (HPV) infect cutaneous and mucosal epithelia and induce benign and malignant lesions. Non‐melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), encompassing basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), is the most frequent cancer in the Caucasian population, and the incidence has increased dramatically worldwide.

Evaluation of a prophylactic L2-based vaccine in the pre-clinical model Mastomys coucha and establishment of an in vitro infection model for the cutaneous papillomavirus MnPV [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most frequent cancer in the Caucasian population. Infections with cutaneous human papillomaviruses (HPVs) in conjunction with UV and immunosuppression are risk factors in the development of this type of cancer.

Optimizing waterborne eDNA capture from waterholes in savanna systems under remote field conditions

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 24, Issue 4, May 2024.
Abstract Environmental DNA (eDNA) is used for biodiversity assessments in a variety of ecosystems across the globe, whereby different eDNA concentration, preservation and extraction methods can outperform others depending on the sampling conditions and environment.

Serological markers for papillomavirus infection and skin tumour development in the rodent model Mastomys coucha

open access: yesJournal of General Virology, 2010
This study used the rodent Mastomys coucha latently infected with Mastomys natalensis papillomavirus (MnPV) and Mastomys coucha PV2 (McPV2), which induce skin papillomas and anogenital condylomas, respectively, to investigate PV antibody responses as serological markers during pathogenesis.

Setaria digitatamicrofilaraemia inMastomys coucha: an animal model for chemotherapeutic and immunobiological studies

open access: yesParasitology, 1996
SUMMARYIntraperitoneal implantation of adult gravid females of the bovine filarial parasite,Setaria digitatainMastomys couchawas found to induce microfilaraemia lasting for about 125 days. The microfilariae (mf) could be detected as early as 4 days postimplantation (p.i.) and peak levels of about 30 mf in 20 µl of blood were observed by 21 days.
