Abstract Soil nature and water saturation of the near‐surface directly influence land use resilience and sustainability in urban areas facing intense climate forcing and human activity. Seismic methods are widely applied in this context for subsurface characterization and monitoring, but often fall short in delivering joint geological, hydrogeological,

The small‐strain damping ratio plays a crucial role in assessing the response of soil deposits to earthquake‐induced ground motions and general dynamic loading. The damping ratio can theoretically be inverted for after extracting frequency‐dependent Rayleigh wave attenuation coefficients from wavefields collected during surface wave testing.

Valley of Mexico site response from non‐reference site approach
We present a model for Valley of Mexico site response that is referenced to a 30 m time‐averaged shear wave velocity (VS30) of 760 m/s. This reference condition ensures compatibility with regional ground motion models (GMM) for Central America and Mexico (CAM), which were developed from an expanded version of the NGA‐Subduction (NGA‐Sub) database as ...

Velocity model estimated from seismic refraction survey and MASW, at Flamengos site (Faial island, Azores) [PDF]
The aim of this communication is to present the velocity models of propagation of seismic waves P and S using geophysical methods, such as refraction surveys and MASW (Multichannel analysis of surface waves).

Evaluation of soil liquefaction from surface analysis [PDF]
In this paper we describe how some techniques for estimating shallow shear wave velocity profilesobtainedfrommeasurementsofambient vibrations and from artificially generated waves can be used to assess sand liquefaction potential.

Abstract Analysis of ambient seismic noise is of increasing interest for its potential to monitor aquifers, seismic wave velocity being sensitive to fluctuations of the water table or to pore pressure variations. The correlation with groundwater pressure variations in confined aquifers, which are often strategic, is an open scientific question, as is ...

Application of Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves to S-Phase Wave Anisotropy Estimation [PDF]
The Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) is an increasingly used technique for recognition of a shallow geological structure and estimation of geotechnical parameters, e.g., S-wave velocity, layer density, layer thickness, shear modulus ...

Abstract Degradation within a manmade earth embankment structure is often unobservable from the surface. In order to evaluate the structural integrity of earth embankment levees and dams and identify subsurface zones of weakness that may result in the future failures of such structures, various geophysical methods have been proposed as effective ...

Multi‐Scale Geophysical Imaging of a Hydrothermal System in Yellowstone National Park, USA
Abstract Little is known about the local plumbing systems that fuel Yellowstone's famous hot springs, geysers and mud pots. A multi‐method, multi‐scale geophysical investigation was carried out in the Obsidian Pool Thermal Area (OPTA) to: (a) delineate the lateral extent of the hydrothermal area and associated surface features; (b) estimate the ...
