The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Comparison of bioactive coils and bare platinum coils for treatment of intracranial aneurysms: a matched-pair analysis Clinical article

open access: yes, 2010
Object. The primary goal of this matched-pair analysis was to evaluate the durability of the treatment results with Cerecyte coils in comparison with that of bare platinum coils in terms of angiographic occlusion rates at follow ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Paper 83: Clinical Outcomes of ACL Reconstruction vs ACL Repair: A Matched-Pair Analysis

open access: yesOrthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, 2022
Objectives: Renewed interest in ACL repair is supported by promising early results from case series. However, comparative studies are currently lacking.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Clinical outcomes and dialysate calcium concentrations in Chinese patients on maintenance hemodialysis: a retrospective cohort study

open access: yesRenal Failure
Background The appropriate concentration of dialysate calcium (DCa) for maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients remains a subject of ongoing debate. The relationship between DCa concentration and patient outcomes is not yet well established.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

When Does It Pay to Break the Matches for Analysis of a Matched-Pairs Design? [PDF]

open access: yesBiometrics, 1992
Two methods of analysis are compared to estimate the treatment effect of a comparative study where each treated individual is matched with a single control at the design stage. The usual matched-pairs analysis accounts for the pairing directly in its model, whereas regression adjustment ignores the matching but instead models the pairing using a set of
