Stronger instruments via integer programming in an observational study of late preterm birth outcomes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In an optimal nonbipartite match, a single population is divided into matched pairs to minimize a total distance within matched pairs. Nonbipartite matching has been used to strengthen instrumental variables in observational studies of treatment effects,

Regularity of colour statistics in explaining colour composition preferences in art paintings

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
This study explores the role of colour statistics in painting preferences and tests the ‘matching-to-nature’ hypothesis which posits that the preference for the colour composition of paintings depends on the extent to which the paintings resemble the ...

Moderate deviations for the determinant of Wigner matrices

open access: yes, 2013
We establish a moderate deviations principle (MDP) for the log-determinant $\log | \det (M_n) |$ of a Wigner matrix $M_n$ matching four moments with either the GUE or GOE ensemble.

Symbolic Maximum Likelihood Estimation with Mathematica [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Mathematica is a symbolic programming language that empowers the user to undertake complicated algebraic tasks. One such task is the derivation of maximum likelihood estimators, demonstrably an important topic in statistics at both the research and ...

Statistics of polarisation matching

open access: yesIET Science, Measurement & Technology, 2014
The reception of electromagnetic signals depends on the polarisation matching of the transmitting and receiving antenna. The practical matching differs from the theoretical one because of the noise deterioration of the transmitted and eventually received electromagnetic field.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.
