Material flow estimation in CELSS
Acta Astronautica, 1992Through the tentative lunar base construction study aiming to explore the system design method regarding closed loop life support system, the feasible system configuration including many subsystems is defined. Based upon this configuration and the estimated metabolic data of human and plants, the required material flow quantities between each ...

Modeling of Material Flow Problems
2017In this article we discuss the description of modern manufacturing or production problems using continuous models. Instead of a detailed description of the production process, a mathematical formulation is used based on transport equations. The challenge is to derive novel and nonstandard approaches that allow to incorporate detailed nonlinear dynamic ...

Pipe Flow of Plastic Materials
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1980Plastic materials behave as both solids and fluids. When forced to move in a pipe, they flow as a solid plug with a slipping boundary. Depending on the cross-sectional shape of the pipe, the slipping boundary may not coincide with the inner boundary of the pipe. When such is the situation, there exist dead regions in the flow.

On flows of granular materials
Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics, 1994This article reviews the behavior of materials made up of a large assemblage of solid particles under rapid and quasi static deformations. The focus is on flows at relatively high concentrations and on conditions when the interstitial fluid plays an insignificant role.

Abstract The motion of granular material is not readily predicted by the techniques developed for either fluid or solid mechanics. Although there are many industrial applications (i.e. transport of coal, grain, powder, salt etc.), this field still requires more rigorous scientific analysis. Experiments conducted with the flow of several (non-cohesive)

Material flow analysis (MFA) is a tool to quantify the flows and stocks of materials in arbitrarily complex systems. MFA has been widely applied to material systems in providing useful information regarding the patterns of resource use and the losses of materials entering the environment.

A distinguishing feature between flows of granular materials and other solidfluid mixtures is that in granular flows the direct interaction of particles leads to energy dissipation which plays an important role in the flow mechanics. For example, take a pebble and drop it onto the sand on a beach.
