Premature maternal separation and lymphocyte function
Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, 1988Premature separation of rat pups from their mothers, on postnatal Day 15, produced a decreased response of peripheral blood lymphocytes to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) at 40 days of age. A significant lymphopenia was also found in the early weaned animals at 40 days of age although this was accounted for statistically by their lower body weight.

The early postnatal period is a time of tremendous change for the dam and her offspring. During this time, environmental insults such as repeated stress exposure can have detrimental effects. In research that has focused on the effect of postnatal stress

Responses to maternal separation : mechanisms and mediators
International Journal of Developmental Neuroscience, 1998AbstractClinical studies indicate the predominance of psychosocial factors (nurturing environment) in the genesis of the Maternal Deprivation Syndrome. Consequences of disrupting mother‐infant interactions range from marked suppression of certain neuroendocrine and physiological systems after short periods of maternal deprivation to retardation of ...

Maternally separated rats show deficits in maternal care in adulthood
Developmental Psychobiology, 2001AbstractAlthough there is considerable research on the phenomenology, neuroendocrinology, neuroanatomy, and sensory control of maternal behavior, little is known about the influences of early postnatal and postweaning experiences on the development of maternal behavior.

Responses of maternal and non-maternal ewes to social and mother-young separation
Behavioural Processes, 1994The response to social deprivation in non-maternal non-pregnant ewes was compared with that in post-parturient ewes kept with their lamb. In addition, the response to separation from the lamb was investigated in lactating ewes at times ranging from 24 h to 2 months post partum. Ewes were observed for 5 min in a 2 × 4 m pen, either in the presence or in

One clear conclusion from the research on the effects of maternal employment is that the relationships among employment, maternal beliefs, attitudes and practices, and child development are complex and require consideration of many factors. Stolz (1960), in one of the first reviews of the topic, concluded that a striking characteristic of the research ...

Sexual behavior of maternally separated gibbons (Hylobates)
Developmental Psychobiology, 1997The effect of early maternal separation on the sexual behavior of captive gibbons was investigated because (a) maternal separation compromises sexual behavior of some nonhuman primates and (b) adequate sexual behavior is essential to species propagation. Most of the maternally separated gibbons (24/31) were sexually proficient.
