Use of Restricted Nursing and a Bovine Appeasing Substance on the Welfare, Growth Performance, and Response to Vaccination of Beef Calves at Weaning

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
The effects of restricted nursing (RN) and the administration of a bovine appeasing substance (BAS) on days −8 and 0 in relation to weaning were evaluated. Both strategies were effective in improving the growth performance of beef calves. Regarding welfare, BAS ‐especially on day 0‐ was more effective than RN.

Information Dynamics of the Mother–Fetus System Using Kolmogorov–Sinai Entropy Derived from Heart Sounds: A Longitudinal Study from Early Pregnancy to Postpartum

open access: yesEntropy
Kolmogorov–Sinai (KS) entropy is an indicator of the chaotic behavior of entire systems from an information-theoretic viewpoint. Here, we used KS entropy values derived from the heart sounds of four fetus–mother pairs to identify the changes in fetal and

Welfare Reform and Children's Short-Run Attainments

open access: yes
Using PIAT Math test score as a measure of attainment, we find that both single mothers' work and welfare use in the first five years of their children's lives have a positive effect on children's outcomes, but this effect declines with initial ability ...

Modulating Taste Perception in Newly Weaned Piglets: The Role of Palatability Additives in Enhancing Feed Intake and Performance

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Palatability enhancers modulate taste and smell, increasing feed acceptance, reducing weaning stress, and improving piglet performance. ABSTRACT The continuous growth of global agribusiness stimulates the search for alternatives that can enhance the performance and quality of life of production animals.

Informal employment, population health, and welfare policies: A global empirical analysis between 2011-2021.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
Despite informal employment being the most common type of employment globally, the empirical link between informality and health is underexplored.

Child Health and Maternal Work Activity: The Role of Unobserved Heterogeneity [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper investigates the extent to which child health affects maternal work activity. Estimating this causal relationship is complicated because unobserved heterogeneity that affects a child’s health might also affect the mother’s labor market ...

Heat Stress and Gut Microbiome Dynamics in Poultry: Interplay, Consequences, and Mitigation Strategies

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Heat stress disrupts gut microbial balance in poultry, impairing nutrient absorption and immunity. This review outlines the interplay between thermal stress and microbiome dynamics and discusses integrative mitigation strategies, probiotics, phytogenics, cooling systems, and genetic adaptation to enhance poultry resilience.

The inequality of maternal health in urban sub-Saharan Africa

open access: yes, 2003
Numerous studies document the urban poor disadvantage in child health conditions in African cities. This study uses DHS data from 23 countries in sub-Saharan Africa to examine whether the urban poor experience comparable disadvantages in maternal health.

Longitudinal Modulation of the Gut Microbiome and Growth Performance by Phytochemicals as Antibiotic Alternatives in Swine Production

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
We conducted a longitudinal trial across nursery, growing, and finishing phases, showing that phytochemical supplementation as a potential antibiotic alternative reduced potential pathogens and promoted beneficial Lactobacillus amylovorus in the nursery phase, and enriched amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism pathways (prediction) during finishing ...
