Teacher's visual attention when scaffolding collaborative mathematical problem solving

open access: yesTeaching and Teacher Education : An International Journal of Research and Studies, 2019
Teachers' role in scaffolding students' problem-solving process is crucial. New technology provides researchers with possibilities to explore this aspect of teaching from the viewpoint of teacher attention.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

The ability to identity word problem types longitudinally predicts children’s mathematical problem-solving

open access: yes, 2021
Many children face difficulties in solving word problems, but we have yet learned enough about the sources of such difficulties. The current study examined whether the ability to classify word problems into different word problem types played a ...

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Investigating Critical Thinking Skill of Junior High School in Solving Mathematical Problem

open access: yesInternational Journal of Instruction, 2019
Critical thinking skills are one of the four skills needed in the 21st century. Critical thinking skills are so important that they need to be taught and included in the school curriculum.

Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

Mathematical Problem-Solving Abilities and Chess

open access: yesSAGE Open, 2015
Chess is thought to be a game demanding high cognitive abilities to be played well. Although many studies proved the link between mastery in chess and high degree of intelligence, just few studies proved that chess practice can enhance cognitive ...

Optimization of the Production of Rubber Compounds Using Mathematical Models

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Rubber compounds were mixed in a batch internal mixer, and symbolic regression was used to derive mathematical models linking recipe and process parameters to ram path, torque, and mixing quality (incorporation, dispersion, distribution). Subsequent optimization with evolutionary algorithms identified operating conditions that reduce specific energy ...
